  2. when did you register for the hbos catalouge ? as far as i no all the catalouges were sent out the start of the week so you should have already got yours already if your on the hbos catalouge list

In fact, I got an initial details of the auction items before the catalogue was printed. The lady at Spink was nice enough to send it to me in soft copy. It contained 212 lots. She said the catalogue was not ready until two weeks time. She promised to send me one. Overseas customers will take a much longer time to receive it. Is this the first time that Spink auction out these fancy numbers banknotes ? I don't remember seeing any fancy number banknotes being auction out in the past.

  3. the 555555 ones are not a bad price, quiet good, i'm going for the 444444 ones to match my bank of england new £20 444444

    there's a nice set of a £5 pound note and a £10 pound note AA555555 Estimate £50 to £80 or a £20 and a£50 AA555555 Estimate £100 to £150

Are these estimates accurately reflect the market prices ?

  4. just wanted to add a few more ;)

Great to see that you are still hot in collecting these interesting chop marks. :ninja:;)

One interesting question I have. What happen if we use these ink chop to chop them on polymer banknotes.

I believe the ink will run.

They will need to use a permanent ink for chopping them on the polymer notes.

    ;)

  5. I thought these things on eBay were grossly overpriced. It made a good time for me to sell Scottish banknotes on eBay, since mine were the only non Jack Nicklaus notes.

Curiously they are mispelled on eBay too, Jack Nicholas etc.

If you want a good JN note mailed in a cardboard, PM me. I have contacts there that work in RBS.

Dave - Any possibilities of acquiring a solid 555555 from your contacts working in RBS. :ninja:

  6. lol...plenty! Palestine, 1962 Katanga issues (1960 issues are ugly!), Greenland, Sarawak, Malaya, British Borneo, Italian Somaliland, German East Africa, Monaco, Keeling & Cocos, St Pierre et Miquelon, Reunion, Zanzibar, Qatar & Dubai, Rhodesia & Nyasland, Panama, and Tibet.

And that's just countries I don't have. From what I do have, my South Americans can use improvement, I still want a Seychelles "Sex" note, and I need a proper series run from the Bahamas. On the US side, I don't have a single large-sized note, light green seal, chartered bank national, fractional, or obsolete.

There's no such thing as running out of stuff to collect. :ninja:

Do you have a banknote from Bahrain ? Name a few of your favourite 2 digits number ? ;)

  7. Just won two great banknotes on ebay. Portuguese 5000 reis 1901 P80 and 500 escudos 1922 P130. The 500 escudos type was involved in the (in)famous Angola and metropole fraud by Alves Reis. Here is the story about it: http://www.cabinetmagazine.org/issues/21/burton.php

I really like the story about this Portugal note although it is a bit confusing when I first read it. I will put this into my website under the article with both the article and the link to the orginal article.

Is there any other good story relating to banknotes ? :ninja:

  8. Yeah, I know that Pick is the better term - I just got used to calling them all Krause - I should probably make that a new year's resolution. I have the Specialised Issues catalogue and they are Pick #s S697,s682,S698 Blue, and S698 Gray. Curiously the one labled as S682 is supposed to be Orange according to the catalogue, but it really is more of a pink color.

I pretty much could gleen the meanings of the Spanish as they are very close to the English in this case. Thankfully they are not like the German Notgeld with different dialects and colloquialisms which make translating uber difficult.

While, like you, I have not looked into Mexican Banknotes much and have only a few of them. These particular notes were an impulse buy and not at all expensive. I was really wondering about the term "Pasteboard" in the descriptions of both the seller and in Pick (I got it right that time!). I had not come across that term before and I think that is what really made the sell. Now I know that pasteboard is merely a form of cardboard and I feel nice and smart; I just need an occasion to use my newfound terminology and someone who is easily impressed by synonyms for paper products! Anyhow, I was really surprised to find the size so small and the quality beter than expected. I figured they'd be bigger and more delicate than they actually are.

Dave - Nice bit of information on the Mexican notes. I do learn something from Aidan and you from here. If only it is a 555555 and 888888 available for my collection, I will go further into understanding them. :ninja:

  9. see, you know collecting both the ship and bird series would be more than impossible as the highest denomination is 10,000SGD!!! :ninja:

That's true. An advice for those who want to collect Singapore Bird and Ship Series to stop before 10,000 SGD. 1,000 SGD will be just right.

Since 10,000 SGD were produced very much lesser than other denomination, it is unfortunate that in both series, they do not have a 555555. Bird Series only have one solid number A/1 111111 while the Ship series up to AA 222222. In the case of Portrait Series, it is up to OAA 444444. There is no OAA 555555. Just for your information, I have seen both the AA 222222 and A/1 111111 in real note. A few month back, AA222222 appeared and I have a chance to purchase it. The price tag is $40,000 SGD. More than 10 years ago, when it appear, it was at $20,000 SGD. 18 years ago, A/1 111111 was sold by my dealer friend at only $11,000 SGD.

With it's current highest face value, solid numbers $10,000 SGD also does not come cheap. It is not for everyday collectors but for professional and specialized collectors / investors. At this moment, I am just happy with $1000 SGD solid numbers.

    ;);););)

  10. This is one of the banknote I most like;

    Singapore P23a

    sg23a.jpg

    sg23a_b.jpg

It's nice to know that the note that you like best was from my country, Singapore. The most beautiful ones are from the Bird and Ship Series. The current Portrait Series banknotes are ugly.

If you notice in these two series, there are many meaningful things on the notes. The Changi airport features on the ship $100 denote that it is voted the best airport in the world for many years. The ship series remind us of that Singapore is the busiest port in the world as well as it's strategic location in the world from the times of Straits Settlements right up today. It was then a free port and a crown jewel of the British Empire.

The bird series are just as nice featuring local birds seen in Singapore. Collect all of them in both ship and bird series. :ninja:;););)

  11. It is dated 1991.  The Afghani's use the solar Hijri calendar.  To determine the actual year, take the SH year (1370 on your note) and add 621.

edit to add:  It is listed in the SCWPM as P#61c.

    61a is dated SH1358 (1979)

    61b is dated SH1369 (1990)

Thank you for the invaluable explanation. I really appreciate your help. Thanks :ninja:
