  1. "Goals for collecting" sounds like "fighting for peace" to me. As a hunter i need opportunity, chance and bargain.

However i try to focus on ancient Greek and Roman coins with good Classical or Hellenistic style and less modern issues.

(but the i see the still very attractive Lithuanian and Latvian latest issues, ... )

  2. Looks like a cast tourist fantasy fake with popular depictions (warrior - left picture upside down / elephant).

Surface and especially the edge shows all characteristics of a cheap modern tourist fake.

(Worthless but not useless, i collect these in my "black cabinet".)

  3. Probably the reverse of this type:

337-340 AD., Constantinus I (Constantine), posthumous commemorative issue of Constantinus II, Constans and Constantius II from various mints Obv.: DV CONSTANTI - NVS PT AVG , veiled head of Constantine right.
Rev.: (mint mark in exergue) , veiled emperor in quadriga, galloping right; above, Manus Dei (hand of God) reaching down.

    regards

  4. The two upper ones are Hemiobols from ancient Baktria, Indo-Scythian kings, ca. 100-50 BC.

The silver(?) coin below is probably from ancient India, Mauryan Empire, ca. 321-187 BC., punchmarked Karshapana silver coinage.

    regards

  5. Depends on the coin´s surface and state of conservation.

Tooth paste works well on lower grade bronze coins with low contrast caused by flattened surface and homogenous dirt or encrustation layers. As it´s slightly abrasive you can determine the optimum amount of brushing to get the dirt off and increase the contrast on the coin´s surface.

But never on lustrous or proof issues, high grade surfaces, blue silver patina and so on.

  6. The coin may be the goal - but the journey is the reward. It´s also a big thrill to visit, search and travel and being in contact with nice people.

Every specialization sooner or later becomes too expensive and boring to me. So an unspecific hunt for something interesting is more fun than to be fixed on getting a specific coin or medal. Finding rare or beautiful bargains is just a matter of activity, chance and current market potential.

As a matter of course i have some focuses (first of all ancient Greek and Roman coins) where my expertise will be a better adviser to buy. But i also like to scan my circulation change from time to time for Euro coins i might be interested in.

But i must admit this collecting strategy works easier for collectors in the vicinity of the former Roman empire than for those in regions where currency is in use for only some decades.

    :)

  7. Hello,

maybe some of you with `spam-able´ websites had similar experiences: Every time i posted on coinpeople.com i get spam additions and comments to my database for the next few days.

Looks like there are many *diots around trying to spend their useless time putting others off their hobbies. :swearing:

(otherwise: an inconvenient reaction is better than no reaction on a post)
