My very first coin from Iceland.
1000 Kronur, KM# 21, .925 silver, 1100th Anniversery of the first settlement.

Byzantine. Spinks has a full catalogue. Sorry, but I sent it back to the library only last week, so I can't help further!
I am thinking that this is from Venice 1200-1400. Check out the similarities with the AR Grosso coins here -> link. I am on the lookout for a cataloge and any further info.

...added this one today...but I still don't have any of the hard ones

Krause says the population of the Isle of Man is about 68,000. Seems like they have made that many different coins in just the last few years. In otherwords, they are a bit on the commercial side in the coin minting area. Still, I have always wanted a cat coin and so there is room in my silver hunk collection for this one.
KM #234 .999 silver, 1 oz.

Nice purchases.
Thanks Art, I am happy with the purchase. After looking around, I think this may be a Venetian piece and maybe earlier than 1600. It bears some similarity to this one: link

My newest indulgence and identification project. I am thinking maybe 1600's European? Any ideas? It's about 19mm and appears to be silver.

Well, the mailman was good to me today! I got a plaque for my 2005 NGC best presented set, as well as a peace dollar from Dad's Stuff. And I got this:
Sometimes it's nice to have raw gold to see all three sides! This one I bought off eBay for about 10% over melt, so not bad!
Congrats! - oh, and nice hunk of 'melt' that

This group was in a Whitman US proof set case marked 'Philippines 1944' - picked it up for $9 - not a bad deal.

It's been a real dry spell but I retired these two tired warriors from lunch change today.

*gosh* how could I *not* get one of these??

A 'junk' dollar. I am guessing a bit on this date based on the 2nd character for the year 21 coin in Krauss, and the few possibilities - but if anyone knows for sure, please let me know. Krause also notes that some of these were struck in the US!

That always seems to happen! I was looking for a particular date last fall, and saw loads of examples priced at below $700, now I can't find a descent looking example for less than $900! Though one thing I've learned in my years of collecting gold is to be patient above all else. In the past I've jumped on a coin only to find a much nicer and cheaper example a few months down the road! It may take you a while, but this is a worthy set. I would advise you to be patient and buy the nicest coins you can afford, even if it's not just a Christmas present, but several Christmas presents stretching to 2010 and beyond!
Agreed, patience is important. It is not difficult for me to be patient with a large ticket item. I do grow impatient with the smaller ticket items, except I call it being spontaneous and giving myself a well deserved indulgence -
This dealer amazes me - the volume of metal he sells is pretty impresses. His stock of rare coins is even more impressive (oh the 42/41 dime I saw this morning - s w e e t - and $1195). Thing is, when I have a chance to get there it is always crowded with gold-hungry non-collectors and non-collecting sellers. His prices are good, especially when he has a lot of a particular item, but like I said - he moves a lot of stuff. So, for example, in the case, he had maybe 20-30 raw St Gaudens - maybe next time he will have 5 or 50.
There is also not much 'dealing'. You get an assistant to bring him the coin for pricing and that's it. It also appears that he does not do shows or inet auctions.
I have purchased from him for a couple years now and believe he is an honest dealer. I'm pretty sure that when the time is ripe, I will still get the set.

We have been under the "threat" of 10 zillion inches of snow. In this area, that causes a general panic and run on milk and bread Undaunted by the warnings, I enjoyed a trip to a large shop that is nearby and acquired several new pieces. Now the snow really is coming down and is scheduled to snow all night - sounds like a good time to photograph and catalog some coins!
This is a new Canadian silver bullion coin. Several characteristics caught my attention. First, it is a 1/2 oz silver - maybe silver bullion coins have become so popular that smaller sizes are showing up. Second, the strike on this coin is very impressive. The Liz device is incredibly mirrored. Coin in hand, it looks liquid! The fields have been roughened with some parallel brush matting of some kind. It would take a long time to get this coin photographed properly, but this will give you an idea if you have not seen one. Mints are getting better and better and striking these bullion coins - maybe because of all the competition and to distinguish them from non-government issues.

I got this in the mail today to fill one more empty slot:
sweet - ya know your coin reminded me that I had decided to break down and by some gold - had it all worked out..2.50 / 5.00 / 10.00 Indian and an SG - Was working on less than $1200 for ef/au from a local dealer who does a great deal of buisness in metals - but gold was at about 412-415 and I was waiting a bit...I think that was last Sep-Oct or something - I was going to get myself an xmas present - lol
-
I agree, but it is too much like mine.
nahhh I'm not even sure what my theme is here - just kind of went on a large hunk of silver jag - you have some actual direction

The last of this batch of silver..I really like that native princess (and a pretty low mintage).

Yes! I did notice the R instead of D (or what sometimes looked like a P) that I was seeing on all the Venetian pieces - thanx much for the info!
