  1. I think for some, the thrill of the hunt overwhelms all rationality.

This, and also everyone just wants to get a good deal. Or at least believe that they are getting a good deal. Sometimes makes me wonder if my no non-sense "these are my prices" attitude (I regularly run kijiji/craigslist ads) with people costs me business. On the plus side, it does make dealing much more efficient. Quickly weeds out those people who are looking to buy silver after it has a great week... at the previous week's price.

  2. On the other hand, an educated consumer is not always your best customer. Of course this also comes out of the problem of a two tiered price system, one for dealers and one for collectors. Collectors expect equal sale, dealers expect the lower price.

Indeed, this can be a very contentious issue.

Had a funny email exchange not long ago where a guy was interested in starting a Canadian silver dollar collection, using junk silver. He actually asked if I had any 1948's in my junk pile because they are so expensive everywhere else, lol. For those not familiar with Canadian silver dollars, 1948 is THE key date, mintage of under 19,000. It could be slicked to a barely readable date, holed, as well as harshly cleaned and still be a $400 coin.

  3. Very cool! And as for mine, it's only a half dollar, but it's hard to tell on the draped bust since there is no denomination on the reverse!

Ah, well a nice coin still :) I've never understood coins without denominations, especially sovereigns and half sovs which are almost the same diameter too.

  4. Kornholio, are those the ones the mint was selling for face value? I got an e-mail on them, but forgot about them until they were gone! I usually buy my annual train coin from the Canadian mint. But, I did go to the post office today and picked up this package! It's been a while since I've gotten a new coin, but this is the first of 2 larger purchases that are coming (thank you tax refund! LOL):

Yep those are the ones. They sold out so fast, I'm glad I was able to get a few family members and friends to order some for me as well :)

    Very nice dollar there though!

  5. Love it, Kornholio. How many other SA coins do you have?

Not a whole lot, maybe 5 or 6 in total. I picked up a partial set of 1965 proofs (the 1c, 2c and 10c) from a junk box a couple years ago just because they were toned. I saw some neat designs in the Krause book that have tickled my brain a bit and will probably fuel some new searches/pickups.

  6. Now available is this modern over-strike "1964-D" Peace silver dollar, the most exacting and faithful rendition ever produced. Holding this coin in hand gives the viewer a true sense of what it would be like to own an original 1964-D Peace silver dollar. And since these are over-struck on genuine Peace silver dollars, they have the correct weight (no metal is added or removed), correct metallic content, and correct diameter. Even the number of reeds on the edge (189) is correct. And to top it off, all the over-strikes are privately and painstakingly performed using a surplus Denver Mint coin press !

In an ironic twist, the original 1964 Peace dollars are illegal to own. But this modern fantasy is LEGAL and is not required to carry a "COPY" stamp for the following reasons:

    1) These are not copies of Peace silver dollars - they are privately over-struck on GENUINE government-issue Peace silver dollars that were originally minted from 1922-1935.

    2) According to the US Treasury, no 1964 Peace silver dollars survived - so this can't be a copy of one since they don't exist.

    3) Defacing of US coins is legal so long as the defacement isn't for fraudulent purposes.

There's a huge thread about this coin on the Collectors Universe forums. It really seems like the guy making these is doing some serious rule bending. Personally I think it should have some kind of identifier to make sure it is never confused with a real 1964 dollar. I understand that collectors wouldn't pay nearly as much for one with an ugly "COPY" branded into the design, but it really should have a mint mark or some note to make sure people realize it was minted privately.

  7. Congrats, K! Is this for a specific set of yours?

Not really. I just like KGVI coins, especially the halfs and dollars. Had some money ready for a bullion purchase, but then I saw this and had to put in a bid in on it. Somewhat surprised that I won it in fact.

Also picked up one of these, as it's been on my list since I started the Nudity on coins thread a while back:

  8. My grandmother gave all us grandkids the new loonies ($1 Canadian coins) each year they came out, starting in 1987. From there I started collecting other Canadian coins. After that, relatives gave me world coins from their travels that they had saved, mostly from the 1960's and 70s. I still add to my modern world coins book each time I visit my dealer, out of the bulk bins. Searching for new ones reminds me of looking through my lego box as a kid, trying to find that precise piece I need!

  9. I collect

    Roman:

By emperor (1 each, with a focus on 3rd and early 4th century)

By type (Constantinian dynasty type coins, and also coins depicting Sol/Apollo)

    Chinese:

Qing cash by emperor and type.

I also have random stuff that I either liked (and it was $20 or less), or simply wanted an example of (e.g. Sassinian drachm)

Almost exactly what I have collected so far, minus the Chinese coins.

I also have a few random other ancients: a siglos from the 4th century BC, and a Scythian (former Pakistan) Indo Greek drachm.

Mostly I am working on a Roman set by emperor, but certain designs and coins just catch my eye and then I impulse buy!

  10. Great pick-ups!

Nicer British pieces are very hard to come by in Van/Vic - too many collectors.

Around Edmonton I've only found one shop that had anything half-decent for pre-1900 British stuff. Unfortunately, the owner is a major scumbag a-hole, and he will get none of my future business. It's unfortunate, since some of his employees are quite kind and knowledgeable.

Most of the shops around here tend to be geared more towards stamps, or new Mint products :ninja:

  11. the one of every monarch route... i took that route, james II is hard.. i got stuck with a tin farthing in lets say.. shabby lol

william and mary farthings are hard to get in a decent grade that one is alright, shame about the date being worn though.

got a few new pieces myself, i'll upload them later

My post wasn't too clear, this new pickup is a halfpenny. My only William and Mary piece before this was a very worn farthing.

Indeed it is a shame about the date, it was the first thing I noticed after the nice portrait. Thankfully it's a one year type, so I don't think it's too important.

  12. Found a few keepers at the show today!

James II maundy 2 pence (filled a long time hole in the start of my British type set- one of each monarch):

Saw this beauty (Halfpenny!) and couldn't resist bumping a worn out farthing from the same set as mentioned above. Seller graded it VF obv/F rev. So I ended up with a decent deal on a piece with a good portrait.

One for my other most favorite set, toned coins! ICCS AU-58.

Bit of an impulse buy, but I really liked the medieval theme. Turns out it is a commemorative for the 300th anniversary of Innsbruck University. At 20g of .900 silver, I didn't pay much over melt for it either! After seeing some other other images in my World Coins Book in this series, I may be buying more in the near future.

  13. At least you're way ahead of me! My '35 is G-4 (I'm not kidding!)

hehe, I don't think I've ever seen a '35 or '36 dollar in worse than VF. Another project I've got going on is a 1936 dollar of each grade. I have an AU, MS-60, 61 and 62 so far. I've been looking on ebay, but most of the EF and worse ones I have seen have been cleaned or damaged :ninja:
