  1. DECUS ET TUTAMEN  (English)

    An ornament and a safeguard.

    NEMO ME IMPUNE LACESSIT (Scottish)

    Noone provokes me with impunity.

    PLEIDIOL WYF I'M GWLAD (Welsh)

True am I to my country.

With the change to the "bridge" themed £1 coins in 2004, the edge lettering has been replaced with various styles of ornamental.

The majority of all £2 and £5 coins of the UK also carry various edge descriptions. The standard bi-metallic £2 piece carries the phrase "Standing on the Shoulders of Giants", which was taken from a letter Isaac Newton wrote to a fellow scientist, with the full text being "If I have seen futher, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants." Basically, he was trying to explain that he never would have advanced sciences as far as he did if there were not others before him who had advanced it to the point it was.

Some of the more interesting quotes from the £2 are the 2003 DNA commem, which has it spelled out on the edge "deoxyribonucleic acid", the 2005 Guy Fawkes (GunPowder Plot) commem, with the edge "Remember Remember the Fifth of November", and the 2005 St. Pauls' Cathedral (WWII) issue, with the Churchill quote "In victory, magnamity, in peace, goodwill"

The Millenium (1999 & 2000) £5 issues carry the edge legend "What's Past is Prologue"

  2. I have the Remembrance Day one. Very nice.

If anyone could provide the other ones that would be great. Any condition.

The Remembrance Day issue is the only one that was actually issued for circulation. All the others were strictly collectors' issues, mostly in folders.

  3. HOLY COW!  The mailman actually knocked!  I got a bunch of stuff today...

    2002 Oh Canada set

    1929 Latvia 5 Lati

    1880 Mexico 8 Reales

    Belgium - 1 Franc (French legends) - 1909

    Swiss - 5 Francs - 1935

Lemme know when you are finished buying up all the Slovakia silver, then I can start watching for some. :ninja:;)

  4. Hit paydirt today!!!

    1. Canadian Mint set with the colourized teddy bear in stocking, from Tammy!!! GREAT LOOKING!!!!! (I must be careful with these Canadian colourized coins. I think I am going to get into them, deeeeep!!)

    2. Some upgrades for the British decimal album, from a friend on CU boards, via eBay.

    3. The Russian 2000 2 rouble "City Heroes" series of 7, from Grigori over at chervonets.com (also a Lithuanian 5 lita bi-metallic and 1 lita note)

    4. IHS booklet (my other collection) from 1953 Grand National. A little tattered on the spine, but still a nice addition to the collection.

  5. $1.53 Canadain from the CoinStar last night. Included a 1992 NorthWest Territories quarter that I didn't have.

Maybe it is my close proximity, but I swear the CoinStar at the local Kroger takes Canadian coins. I *know* I have ran a few through without any problems.

  6. I think I broke the mailwoman's back today. ;):lol::cry:

A package from Turkey, included 22 new banknotes. A variety from former Soviet states, and a few from Yugoslavia

Another package of notes (10), mostly Yugoslavia, a few others.

A package of Polish coins from Izzy :ninja:;) (money went out this morning!)

A trio of Lithuania 1 litas, including the new Palace of the Dukes.

The new Canadian 25c for Vets.

I am afraid that the banknote bug has bitten me, as I am already browsing eBay looking for some more. Fortunately for me, I have so few that there are still plenty of "bargain" notes that I need. Only going to collect the notes to go with my main collections - Yugoslavia (and, of course: Bosnia, Croatia, Macedonia & Slovenia), and former Soviet states.

  7. Been a good week for me. Since Friday, I have gotten:

1994 UK £1 in Specimen folder

1995 UK £1 in Specimen folder

1996 UK £1 in Specimen folder

    1988 UK BU Mint set

2000 UK £5 Queen Mother's Centenary Birthday Commemorative Crown in Specimen folder

1990 UK silver proof pair of 5p (old large size, new small size)

1997 UK £2 in Specimen folder (first year of bi-metallic)

1998 UK 50p in Specimen folder (25th Anniversary of UK's entry into EU)

some of these are already uploaded to my website, while the rest are sitting here next to the scanner, and should be done over the next day or two.

still awaiting one more package, which contains the 2003 and 2005 Bank of Serbia Mint sets. (coming from Germany)

  8. Never noticed this thread until it was brought back to the top earlier today.

Like socks and underwear, my collecting habits change daily.

Currently, my primary focus is on UK decimal coinage, especially BRM packaged commemorative coins. Making good headway through the £1, got all of the Nickel-Brass £2 (lots of bi-metallic £2 to go), and most of the £5. Casually picking up an occasional BU Mint set, when I see a good price.

My second main collection is my Yugoslav coins. Am about 90% complete of circulation strikes, still have lots of commems. to go, but my budget doesn't stretch to cover the British above and these Yugo commems, so the Yugos are in a holding pattern right now. Once I get the British closer to complete then we shall see.

Other than that, I have several smaller "sub-collections", some of which I hope to continue with, some I will probably dispose of at some time or another.

  9. Hmm.

A decade old VG value of $5. Have any idea what it could be now? $7? $10?

Depends upon demand. If they are "hot" now, then the price could very well be in the $7-10 range you suggest. But, perhaps they were "hot" a decade ago when my reference book was written. Interest could've waned since then, and they could only be worth $2-3.

Not trying to rain on your parade, but at the same time, don't want to get your expectations too high, either.

Sometimes, I really think that Krause just uses arbitrary numbers for some of coins that see little volume of trading, especially those that are not really rare, just not common. A prime example would be the 1963 50 dinara from Yugoslavia. It catalogs at $15.00 in 2002, yet in the same catalog, the 1963 Mint set (contains the same 50 dinara) catalogs at only $8.00. I can get the sets through a few friendly dealers in Belgrade for about $3-4. Maybe I ought to get a few, break them up, and peddle the 50 dinara coins on eBay for a bargain price of L@@K!!! RARE!!!! only $10.00. (I can always sell the 20 dinara pieces to the guy that cuts coins to make jewellry - from other thread)
