  1. Australia had a 5 shilling coin or Crown for 2 years only - it was unpopular because it was so large and so heavy

George VI appeared on the Obverse of the both years

The coin depicted is a 1938 Crown which is the scarcer of the 2

It is difficult to get these coins without any teeth marks in the fields - the sheer weight of the coin dropping into the hoppers invariably marked the coins

  2. There have been several commemmoratives - 1951 was the 50th Anniversary of Federation in Australia

Obverse - note FIDEI:DEF in the Obv legend for defender of the Faith

Reverse - Commemorative with the Symbols of Parliament and Crown - the Sword and the Mace I think it is

  3. Due to the public outcry, the Defender of the Faith representation was added to the OBV legend in a shortened form - because the length of the name ELIZABETH compared to GEORGIUS VI

Obverse - note F:D in the Obv legend

Reverse - used the same Coat of Arms as for George VI florins

  4. With the accession of George VI in 1936 following the abdication of his brother Edward the VIII a new Obverse and Reverse combination was introduced which continued until 1949 when India declared Independence and IND:IMP was removed

  5. I am creating a series of Type sets of Australian coin in this Sub topic.

Hopefully this can be used by members wanting to know more about the Australian coinage.

Australian coinage is basically divided into two era - Pre Decimal from 1910 to 1964 and the Decimal coinage from 1966 to present day.

This first topic deals with the Florins

1910 Edward VII is a one year type but I can't locate the one I have at the moment - I will add the images in here when I find that folder

I friend of mine has kindly provided some images of one of the finest known examples of the 1910 - many thanks to Peter A

    Obv - Edward VII

  6. Here's an 1836 1 Zloty/15 Kopeks with the dual denomination - reading the post and looking at the coin I had found answered the questions I had. I will keep my eye out for the 1835 with the variations in the date.

This coin is low grade but for its age still has recogizable features

Obverse - appears to be an MW

  7. Hello :ninja:

    Thanks for the kind welcome.

I'm Australian and collect Australian pre Decimal (1966 was decimal date) and decimals.

I have an extensive error and variety collection and have a fascination for Brockages of which i have managed to collect some excellent examples.

I like Irish half crowns and my favourite British Coin is the Double Florin of which I have started to accumulate some nice examples

    Have a few Australian Sovereigns

General stuff - I like music (Blues,Rock - anything basically),Monty Python, British Comedy and History.

Hope I can make a contribution to this forum and enjoy myself. At the moment I have just rebuilt my PC - my daughter has come around and borrowed the scanner and I need to reload Photoshop.

I am still feeling my way round in here and its a big site.

    Regards

    Phil
