bobh
I bid on the following lots, but didn't win anything: 857: Gold 5 Roubles 1901-AP 874: 50 Kopeks 1907-ЭБ 898: Rouble 1913-BC, 300 Years Romanov Dynasty However, I did get a chance to examine this coin in person: 840: 50 Kopeks 1898-AГ The gold 1901-AP five roubles would have been nice to win ... although I have one already in my collection, it is only in VF condition or so. This was at least EF or AU. It went for CHF 550; my maximum was just a little shy of 500, so at least I was in the ball park with my bid. The 1907 poltina was advertised as "brilliant uncirculated". When I looked at it, I almost decided not to bid on it because it was obviously a proof. But I took my chances anyway and bid as if it were a business strike. Went for about CHF 2500, I think (not including the 15% juice and VAT). The Romanov rouble is one of the nicest flat strike varieties I have seen in a while. I should have bid a little higher on that one (only CHF 100 -- the hammer was at around 140 or 150). This one was apparently withdrawn: 860: 1902 37-1/2 roubles gold donative I didn't get a chance to attend the auction in person. Things might have turned out differently if I had, but I had to work. C'est la vie!
bobh
Lots 207, 208 and 209 (all three gold Elisabethan poltinas) didn't sell ... I'm out of my league with these, does anyone know why? (Results are out now on sixbid.com) Interesting PR on this one: Rouble 1877, St. Petersburg Mint, HФ. 20,63 g. Bitkin 91. Uncirculated. (Estimate: CHF 250 -- PR: CHF 1700) Wonder if that was also a proof?
Candidate
Interesting PR on this one: Rouble 1877, St. Petersburg Mint, HÔ. 20,63 g. Bitkin 91. Uncirculated. (Estimate: CHF 250 -- PR: CHF 1700) Wonder if that was also a proof? Why?It is simply a scarcer mintmaster's intials (ÍÔ) in this year. Commonly undervalued or even unnoticed, being shadowed by a very simple 1877ÍI rouble. While still being rather common in around VF, it is much harder to find it in UNC condition - over past 5-6 years it has shown up at public auctions just 4 or 5 times. Conros'2009 (#12) values it ~ $1,200 in UNC.
