bobh Posted April 8, 2011 Report Share Posted April 8, 2011 This is an example of 1897 rouble with smooth edge. To my eyes, a new "edge" has been added to the coin. Interestingly enough, the original coin seems to have been the rare variety (2nd reverse) with missing bottom bars on the letters "Б" and "Ь" in the word "РУБЛЬ" (Kazakov 82, according to his catalogue the rarest variety of any of the Nicholas II roubles and quite expensive). Also, Kazakov lists the plain-edge variety as having the 1st reverse (normal letters in "РУБЛЬ"). If the edge hadn't been messed with (IMHO), it would be quite collectible.
