tabbs
What do you do if you think that many collectors might appreciate a €2 commemorative coin for the 2006 FIFA World Cup but the German government won't issue one? Right, you just make one yourself. The Federal Ministry of Finance has issued and will issue several €10 silver coins and one €100 gold piece on the occasion of next year's football championship, but (at least at present) there are no plans to issue a €2 commem. So some clever manufacturer had these things designed: http://i24.ebayimg.com/04/i/04/a0/fd/78_1_b.JPG or http://i7.ebayimg.com/03/i/04/a1/dc/9e_1_b.JPG Due to their size (Ø 30 mm; the actual €2 coins have a diameter of 25.75 mm) and weight (11.5 g compared to 8.5 g) they will hardly be mistaken for actual coins in general circulation. Also, the pieces do not say EURO anywhere; the big 2 is followed by two footballs and the digit 6 (ie. "2006"). But it seems that the company that made these medals, and even more so various eBay sellers, hope that newbie collectors won't notice the difference right away ... Ætheling
I agree with the German government. Stop producing all sporting commems. I wish our government would take a leaf out of your government's book.
