STEVE MOULDING
I came across a four part series on platinum roubles in "Platinum Metals Review" Looks like a nice read, both from a background and technical perspective. All four articles are free, are in PDF format, and can be accessed through this link http://www.ingentaconnect.com/search?form_...&search.y=0 (the link is sometimes a little slow). DAJ
Things we experience. A story told here before. A top dealer sold me five three rouble plats, with the last one being a slab. (I liked these coins, but think they are one of the ugliest of all Russian coins, unless the pedigree is extraordinary.) He said that with the way the market is, one should only buy slabs. I was not sure I liked the slab. So taking his advice I sent his coins to NGC. (He said PGCS takes too long.) I waited and waited and finally called. NGC took extra long to check the coins and ended up saying they could not verifiy the authenticity of any of the four coins, and the dealer took the coins back, though he sputtered some. The moral of the story: Most plats we see for sale would fail the tests described in the articles. All four of my plats seemed perfectly fine and the dealer and I question NGC some on this. Onward and upward....
