Thieves broke into a flat above the Victoria Inn, in Wingate, and took the collection while the landlord and his partner were downstairs serving customers, as reported in Saturday’s Mail. Proprietor Len Stones said he had been collecting the money for the last 30 years and was planning to look to do more after he retired. “I don’t have a lot of time with it these days, but I am 61 and retirement is coming up and it was one of the things I was looking to do,” he said. “I can’t believe the cheek of it. You have got to be philosophical about it, otherwise it would do your head in.”
