Thanks for the insights, CCG. Once the RCM moved forward with the $100 for $100 coins, I did wonder how far such a program might go. I bet we do see a $500 for $500 release in the not-so-distant future, especially considering the $200 is already in the works.

Glad you've joined the forum, Harpagon. The coins on your site are terrific--I love that you've focused on really sharp and uncirculated examples (which makes for great photos!). I've always been fond of the uniformity that comes with the neoclassical style of 19th-century coins.

Very cool, thanks for sharing the pics. I must admit that I do like the State Quarter Proofs. So far I only have Proof versions of the territories and Washington D.C. quarters (two sets). Over the years I put together two sets of the 50 uncirculated coins (although I think the P and D mintmarks are mixed).

Do you have many of the silver State Quarter Proofs? Noticed you had a pair in those pictures.

Very cool. So am I right in presuming that the medal on the left is a unique? Or do you mean the type itself is the only one to bear this effigy of Charles II?

 

I'm with you on the proof vs Unc. situation. I've actually profited better on Unc coins from the Mint on a number of occasions .

Agreed, Art. I gladly paid more for the Uncirculated 1997 Jackie Robinson commem than I did for the Proof. Makes sense when the latter had a mintage over 100,000, and the Unc was just over 30,000.

Thanks for the warm welcome! I actually got into coins through my job; I'm a content writer for a coin company (Gainesville Coins), so hopefully I can offer some insights through my experiences with coins, and pick up some pointers from other members to help me get deeper into collecting.

I bought the Proof and Unc versions of both the clad and silver BHOF coins in April, haven't received any yet; the Mint keeps updating the statuses of the coins in the order, but so far only the Proof half dollar is listed as shipped. I also got the "reserved and in stock" treatment, lol.

I chose to get both finishes because the Uncirculated issues invariably have lower mintages and become desirable down the road, but I can't help but find the Proof more attractive.

I'm also new on this message board. I've bought a handful of coins on eBay with mixed results. If the seller does a good job of taking pictures, you may be able to photograde a coin pretty accurately (assuming it's genuine). I bought a common date Walking Liberty half (1942, if I recall) that looked to have terrific luster and strike for about $35 on eBay; I sent it to NGC for grading and it came back MS64, which I was really happy with. I could probably sell it now for twice what I paid.

However, I've had equally bad experiences on eBay, too. I paid almost $20 for a 1943 Mercury dime that looked to have beautiful toning. When I received it, I realized the patina was clearly artificial, as it rubbed off easily between my fingers, revealing a white coin beneath. It still has AU details in my opinion, but nobody wants an altered coin; it was definitely a losing transaction on my end.

Sorry to lead the topic astray a bit; next time I'll start a new thread or find the relevant one to post in. I just think the risks/benefits of buying coins on eBay is really important for those of us just starting out to understand.
