  1. Late in the day, but I got these notes in earlier. A new set from Burundi. Oddly enough, they said they'd issue a 1000 note later in the year instead of with these other four notes. I'll have to keep a lookout for it. These notes are all smaller than there previous notes and are graduated in size as well. New security features, etc.

  2. Well, I finally had a chance to look through my catalogs and - I came up with nothing. I think this is likely a private issue note by a private bank, or an uncatalogued bank. Either way, there are LOTS - really - lots! - of banknote issuers, and while it's quite possible I missed it, I think it's just not cataloged. Maybe someone who can actually read Chinese rather than 'Match Up' characters in a catalog might come along and be better able to help.

  3. Chucky Lucky 4, Here's one answer - Pretty much what we thought. If you want, I can send the note scan to him, or you can through his link.

I have not confirmed this date (04.09.1961) variety exists for the 10/- note, but I have confirmed almost 550 different varieties of notes for Tonga in The Banknote Book: http://banknotebook.contentshelf.com/pr ... 6000001EC6.

I'm confident this is the most accurate, complete compilation you'll find, but there are likely many more unlisted date varieties to be discovered as Tonga changed the dates often.

If your friend will kindly share scans of his note, I'll add it to The Banknote Book.

  4. Looks as if it should fall into Standard Catalog of World Paper Money (Pick) number P 10d, but the curious thing is that the catalogs I have do not list the date of your note. In fact, they skip 1961 altogether. I would think that this is a new issue found rather than a counterfeit.

  5. I have to drive around every day for a few hours in my job. In so doing, I listen to various radio shows, and I hit upon a very short bit - "Record Bin Roulette" Whose episode titled money made me chuckle. It had a lot of snippets of songs to do with money in about a 4 minute piece. Some I remember and some I'd not heard before. Fun little piece.

Bottom right design is pretty rad - reminds me of some Grateful Dead artwork. What does the obverse say?

I'm sure it says somethin', but I can't be too certain what, exactly. It's in the old German script, and Notgeld is typically written in some type of dialect-ical manner that my middle and high school German can't penetrate enough to be worthy of more than a guess.
