constanius
This Unofficial Farthing Token was issued by John Hayward of 66 Tooley Street in Southwark who was a manufacturer of tobacco & snuff products. There are 2 varieties of this token - with plain & diagonally milled edges. This one has the plain edge. Scarce, undated but 1833 according to Bill McKivor of the CopperCorner. Batty's Surrey; Southwark. 768. O.—"John Hayward Manufacturer of Tobacco & Snuff 66 Tooley Street." R.—" Fancy Snuffs Segars &c." E.—Milled. 769. As 768, smaller and thinner; struck on one of "T . Pryce's" Coins. (See No. 771.) 770. As 768, smaller and thicker I like the spelling of "cigar" as "segar". From Webster's 1. An alternative spelling for "Cigar": A small roll of tobacco, used for smoking.
frank
Cool token, Constanius. Does it smell of tobacco?
thedeadpoint
I'm still astonished that these store owners would get coins minted in hopes that they successfully circulate.
bpmurphy
Here's one of mine overstruck on a Southwark token of T. Pryce, BWS 4690. The undertype is quite sharp and the second strike split the flan a little. Barry Murphy
bpmurphy
Oops, meant to post the photo with the accompanying undertype. Barry
constanius
The "SOLE MAN" is quite clear, thanks for the post Barry. I had seen the listing in Batty's, #771, but had never seen an example before.
