What was your most surprising find related to the 1945-S micro S? I’d love to hear stories about how you came across rare pieces!

Hey fellow collectors! I recently had the thrill of discovering a 1945-S micro S nickel while going through some old jars my grandma had saved. I knew about the rarity of this piece, but I never thought I’d actually get my hands on one! The condition is pretty decent too—maybe an EF-40? It’s still got some nice luster, but a few scratches here and there that tell its story.

I’ve done quite a bit of research since then, and it’s fascinating how such a small mint mark can cause such a stir in the collecting community. The micro S really is a heads-up for collectors who are keen on spotting subtle differences. What’s interesting is that I wasn’t even looking for this coin specifically; it was more of a happy accident!

I’d love to hear your surprising finds! Did any of you stumble upon this rare piece in an unexpected place? What are your thoughts on the growing recognition of the micro S among collectors? Let’s share some stories and insights—I’m all ears!

Congratulations on your find! I’m really jealous to hear about your discovery of the 1945-S micro S! I have a funny story about how I stumbled upon one myself. A couple of years ago, I was at a garage sale and saw a box of old coins. The seller didn’t know much about them, and when I looked through, I found a 1945-S nickel. At first, I thought it was just one of those regular nickels, but after checking the mint mark under magnification, I was shocked to see the micro S. I couldn’t believe my luck! I managed to snag the whole box for just $5! It turned out to be a great investment because I later sold the micro S for a decent profit. Have you thought about what you might do with yours? Keep it or resell?

Thanks for sharing your story, @SilverSeekerJoe! It’s amazing how much treasure can be hiding in plain sight. I’m definitely keeping mine for now. It’s such a conversation starter, and I love being able to show it off at coin clubs. Do you still have the garage sale box or did you sell everything else?

That’s an incredible find, @CoinHunter77! The 1945-S micro S is one of those underrated coins that every serious collector should have in their collection. I once bought a lot of coins from an estate sale, and there were three of these little beauties! I had no idea how valuable they were until my local dealer shared their market value and rarity. Sometimes these coins can go for hundreds based on their condition. I ended up getting them graded through PCGS and they came back as MS-66, which was a pleasant surprise! What do you think your coin would grade as?

That’s awesome, @NumismaticNerd! I’m hoping mine could grade around EF-40 as I see some luster left, but the scratches are holding it back. It’s such a thrill to uncover more about its potential value. Have you thought about any specific grading services for your coins?

I love these stories! I’m always surprised at where I find interesting coins. My best find was a 1945-S micro S in a mixed bag at a flea market—had no idea what I was looking at until I got home. My jaw dropped when I figured it out! Didn’t mean to be hunting for a treasure, just out for a fun Saturday!

You guys are making me jealous! I haven’t found anything quite like that yet. Just a lot of common stuff. I guess persistence is key, right? Should I start checking out estate sales too?

Absolutely, @CoinLover85! Estate sales can be gold mines for collectibles. Just keep an open mind and check everything—sometimes the best finds are among the most ordinary-looking coins. Plus, it’s fun meeting new people and hearing their stories. You might just walk away with something amazing! What do you think you’d do with a rare find?

Has anyone here done any comparisons between the 1945-S micro S and the regular 1945-S? I’ve been doing a bit of research, and visually it can be tricky to spot the differences. It’s such a niche area of collecting! I love the thrill of the hunt for these variations. NGC has some great resources on this if anyone is interested.

Great point, @OldCoinHunter! I’ve noticed that the mintmark is not just small but positioned differently too. It’s small details like these that entice us as collectors. I read about some collectors using loop magnifiers to help in spotting these differences when sorting through coins. It makes such a huge difference when you’re aiming for quality. Do you think using tools has enhanced your collecting experience?

Absolutely, @CoinHunter77! A good magnifier opens up a new world for inspecting coins up close. It has helped me catch several misattributed coins and even some valuable varieties I might have missed otherwise. Investing in the right tools is part of the joy of collecting and can really elevate your game! How do you guys store your finds? Any tips?

Thanks for sharing all these cool experiences! I’ve yet to find a rare nickel, but I did find a bunch of old pennies that led to some fun research on their varieties. It’s true what they say: you never know what hidden gems are out there waiting to be discovered. Hoping to get lucky like you all someday!
