What stories do fellow collectors have about their first Saint Gaudens purchase? It’s always inspiring to hear how others got started!

Hey fellow collectors! I was reminiscing about my early days in coin collecting, and I couldn’t help but remember my first Saint Gaudens purchase. It was a 1908-D Double Eagle, and I stumbled upon it at a local coin show after sending countless hours online browsing and reading up on these stunning coins. The artistry and history behind the design drew me in, and after some negotiating, I walked away with a graded MS63 specimen that still takes pride of place in my collection.

What I found particularly fascinating was the dealer’s recount of the coin’s journey; he said it was originally owned by a family who saved it during the Great Depression. That story, combined with the beauty of the coin itself, really sparked my passion for collecting. Now, I’m curious to hear from all of you: what was your first Saint Gaudens experience? How did it inspire you to dive into this hobby? Any tips for newcomers looking to start their own journeys?

Looking forward to your stories and opinions! Also, if anyone has advice on maintaining these beauties, I’m all ears. Happy collecting!

Great topic, CoinHunter92! My first Saint Gaudens purchase was a 1924 Double Eagle. I actually found it in my grandfather’s old coin collection. PF65 grade, but it was tarnished and needed some cleaning. I remember the feeling of holding that coin; it felt like holding a piece of history! I’ll never forget the moment I discovered its value. I took it to a local dealer, and he gave me more than I expected. That day sparked my journey into numismatics. I’ve since learned so much about the history of these coins and their significance. Just like you, the artistry really drew me in.

  • Tip for newcomers: Always research the dealer you’re buying from.
  • Handle coins by their edges to avoid fingerprints.
  • Invest in a good coin holder!
Can’t wait to read more stories!

My first Saint Gaudens was a 1907 D, and I got it at a small estate sale. I was so excited that I practically begged the seller to let it go for less! :joy: It ended up being in AU55 condition and fit right into my growing collection. That moment made me realize the treasure hunting aspect of coin collecting. It wasn’t just about the coins; it was about the stories behind them. Some of my favorite coins are now linked to such engaging tales from where I got them.

I can totally relate to the excitement! My first Saint Gaudens purchase was definitely memorable too. I bought a 1926 at a local coin shop where the owner had fantastic knowledge and shared stories about the coins’ history. It was a graded MS64, and I still remember how I hesitated at first. But hearing him talk about the artistry and craftsmanship inspired me to make the purchase. Now, I’m hooked! I think it’s important for newcomers to connect with knowledgeable dealers like I did. My first was a 1908-S Saint Gaudens I bought at a community auction. It was my introduction to the world of gold coins! I just loved the design. After discovering the high relief versions, I was hooked. These coins are just breathtaking! They really do inspire a sense of history. Any advice on how to keep them in good condition?

@CoinLady77, for keeping your coins in good condition, definitely avoid cleaning them. Use protective holders and store them in a cool, dry place. I also use anti-tarnish strips just for extra measure. They really help to preserve the beauty of these coins over time!

Just a reminder to everyone! Always handle your coins with clean hands and avoid touching the surfaces directly. The oils from your skin can damage the coin’s surface over time. Using cotton gloves is a good way to go! Happy collecting, everyone!
