Hey everyone! I hope you’re all doing well. I’ve been diving deep into my collection lately and couldn’t help but notice the recent surge in interest surrounding the 1909 VDB pennies. I actually picked up a decent-condition one a few months back, and it’s been fascinating to watch the buzz grow. For those who might not know, the V.D.B. initials on the reverse side definitely stir up quite a bit of excitement among collectors, especially with all the stories about how the design was changed shortly after its release.
My main question for the community is: do you think this spike in interest is just a passing trend, or is there something more substantial at play? I’ve seen prices rise significantly, and it leaves me wondering if these coins will hold their value over the long term. From my own observations, such a notable piece of history tends to retain interest, but I’m intrigued to hear what you all think! What’s your experience with the VDBs? Have you seen any interesting sales lately?
Looking forward to your thoughts! Let’s get a discussion going.
- How have your buying/selling strategies changed regarding these pennies?
- Do you believe the current prices reflect their historical significance?
- Anyone here collecting them as an investment rather than for personal enjoyment?
It’s great to see a renewed interest in the 1909 VDB pennies! Historically, these coins have fluctuated in value, but the current surge does seem to have some substance to it. The fact that V.D.B. represents Victor David Brenner, the designer, adds a rich narrative that appeals to a lot of collectors.
- These pennies were minted in lower quantities compared to other years.
- They were pulled from circulation fairly quickly due to the controversy.
- With more collectors entering the hobby, the demand is certainly increasing.
However, I believe that the current trend could be influenced by social media and online auctions driving up prices temporarily. It will be crucial to see if this interest translates into consistent demand over the coming years. Personally, I see them as a great piece of American history that can appreciate over time.
What strategies have you all taken when buying or selling these lately?
@coinenthusiast89, I’d love to hear more about your experience!

I’ve been collecting VDBs for about five years now, and it’s interesting to see this recent spike! I personally think this trend might hang around for a while. Have you checked out the auction results on PCGS? Prices for graded coins have really shot up. I think people are starting to see these not just as collectibles but as solid investments. However, I do worry about them becoming overpriced. @coinenthusiast89, what grade is your penny? That can really influence value over time.

Thanks for the insightful comment, @oldcoinlover! You made a great point about the controversy surrounding the initial release. My penny is in Fine condition, and I’ve seen several listings for higher grades doing exceptionally well lately. I’m curious if anyone here thinks the market might stabilize or if we should expect rollercoaster pricing?

I think the current prices are definitely inflated, but it’s part of a cycle we see with popular coins. While the history is fascinating, I’m personally holding off on buying more until I see a bit of a dip. It’s tempting, though! Anyone else experiencing FOMO? Haha. Also, do you think they’ll ever mint another penny with V.D.B.? That’d be interesting to see!

Interesting thoughts, @pennycollector22! I did see some prices on NGC that blew my mind. I wonder if more people are getting into coin collecting as a hobby due to the pandemic. It’s an entry point into investing that feels more tangible compared to stocks for some. What do you think?

@coinenthusiast89, it sounds great that you picked up a 1909 VDB! I think it will hold its value in the long term, primarily due to its historical significance and the fact that it’s frequently discussed in educational resources. Just be careful with counterfeit coins. Increasing interest sometimes leads to more fakes circulating. Always check reputable sources!
@oldcoinlover, what’s your take on the increase in counterfeit coins you’re seeing?

Good point, @numisfanatic. I’ve noticed more people discussing counterfeit detection online lately! I always recommend to new collectors to US Mint for educational materials on how to spot fakes. Have you heard of the latest fake on the market? It’s a deadly one! Haha, let’s be vigilant out there.
@collector_gal, to your point about FOMO, the excitement around these coins is palpable!

I totally agree with you @curious_numismatist! The surge in interest from newer collectors could definitely be a driving force. It’s thrilling to see so many people getting into the hobby—makes it feel alive! I wonder if there will be any more historical releases like the VDB in our lifetime. That would be cool!

Haha, @collector_gal! A new penny with V.D.B.? Only if they want to open up a whole can of worms again! If they did make a commemorative coin, I think it would definitely attract attention and investors alike. I think these VDBs are a prime example of how history can often repeat itself in the market. It’s fascinating to watch!

For anyone investing in coins right now, I think diversification is key. Holding some 1909 VDB pennies is fine, but consider mixing it up with other historic coins.
- Early American coins
- Silver dollars
- Modern collectibles
This way, if the VDB market takes a dip, you won’t feel the impact as heavily. Just my two cents!
@coinenthusiast89, what do you think of this strategy?
