What are the differences between the various W quarters released? Are there any key dates or varieties that collectors should know?

Hey fellow collectors! I’ve been diving deep into the world of the 2019-W quarters lately, and I have to say, I’m absolutely fascinated by the variations we’re seeing. For those who might not be aware, these quarters were the first to bear the West Point mint mark and made quite a splash in the numismatic community.

One thing I’ve noticed is that the designs vary significantly, especially the America the Beautiful series. The War in the Pacific National Historical Park and the San Antonio Missions designs, in particular, seem to be drawing a lot of interest. I recently picked up a War in the Pacific quarter in great condition—I’d say it’s around MS66— and I’m curious if others have had luck finding higher grades or perhaps some of the reverse varieties that didn’t get as much spotlight?

I’d love to hear your thoughts on these W quarters! What are the key dates or varieties that you consider must-haves? Have any of you stumbled across any unique finds? Let’s discuss our favorite designs and tips for hunting down those elusive pieces!

Great topic, coinfanatic92! The 2019-W quarters certainly added a fascinating layer to the already rich tapestry of U.S. coinage. For starters, the West Point mint mark not only signifies the mint of origin but also indicates a level of desirability among collectors. As you mentioned, the War in the Pacific and San Antonio Missions designs stand out in the America the Beautiful series. From my experience, the War in the Pacific quarter, especially in MS66 or higher, has seen significant price appreciation. Key dates to note would definitely include the early releases, and I’d also suggest looking out for any reverse die varieties that may not have been widely documented. I personally found a San Antonio Missions which came with an unusual die crack on the obverse, which sparked my interest. Here’s a link to learn about the grading standards at PCGS that could help when assessing your finds.
Happy hunting, everyone!

I totally agree with you, numismaticnguru! The 2019-W quarters introduced a new level of excitement. I’ve managed to find quite a few in circulation, but it took a while. The Tuskegee Airmen design seems to be underrated by many collectors right now but has great potential in the future. I’ve heard that the War in the Pacific is a must-have, especially in higher grades.

Did anyone else notice how quickly they went off eBay? It’s almost like a treasure hunt trying to score them!

@coinfanatic92: Have you been checking eBay or local shops? What’s your strategy?

Nice insights, everyone! I’m relatively new to collecting, but I’ve been trying to learn all I can. Can someone explain what makes a coin like the 2019-W more valuable? Is it just the mint mark, or are there other factors? I’d appreciate any tips on distinguishing between different grades as well!

I’m planning on getting the San Antonio Missions soon. Fingers crossed!

Hey @goldenpenny, welcome to the hobby! Great question! The value of coins like the 2019-W quarters often hinges on several factors:

  • Mint mark: The ‘W’ means they were minted at West Point, which adds to collectibility.
  • Grade: Higher grades such as MS65 or MS66 command better prices.
  • Rarity: Specific designs or low mintage coins are typically more sought after.
Learning to assess grades can be tricky, but NGC’s guide is a good start. Happy collecting!

I’ve also had a fantastic time collecting the W quarters! I’m particularly excited about the American Memorial Park design as well. Does anyone have tips on where to find them? I’ve been checking my change regularly, but it seems like they pop up only when I’m not looking! :joy:
Any advice on spotting these coins in the wild?

LOL @coinresearcher! The hunt is real! I’ve had more luck at coin shows than in my everyday change.

When I first started, I picked up a few packs of quarters from the bank—some nice surprises there too! I recommend trying that method. You may get lucky with a few W quarters! Keep an eye out at local shops as well.
