It got me really thinking about how I store my collection. I’ve always kept my coins in flips, but I’ve heard mixed opinions about whether that’s the best option.
So, I’m curious to hear what practices you all have adopted to preserve the condition of your coins, especially those more susceptible to damage. Do you prefer air-tites, capsules, or something else? I’ve been trying to investigate the ideal humidity levels and whether it’s critical to keep them out of direct light. I read somewhere that the type of storage material can really impact the preservation; I definitely don’t want my coins to end up with more marks than they already have!

First off, keep your coins in a controlled environment—humidity levels should ideally be around 40-50%. Flips are good for low-value coins, but I recommend using air-tites for anything you want to preserve better. They offer a hard, protective barrier without the risk of scratching like flips can. Also, remember to keep your coins away from direct sunlight. Some coins can tarnish or fade if exposed too long. Lastly, avoid touching the surfaces of the coins with bare hands. I’m with you on the importance of a good storage system! Never underestimate the damage bag marks can do to your coins. I switched to archival-safe holders a few years ago, which are excellent for minimizing contact. Also, if you’re transporting coins, consider soft cases that offer a bit of padding. Finally, I always keep my collection in a safe, dark place. Just like you fear those bag marks, I fear light damage!

Agreed, CoinEnthusiast101! It’s surprising how much light exposure can affect coin quality. I also recommend using silica gel packets in storage boxes to help control humidity. A little moisture can cause serious issues over time.

Coin handling is just as important! I always advise beginners to train themselves on proper techniques. For instance, always hold coins by the edges and avoid contact with the surfaces.
