Hey fellow collectors! I recently got my hands on a 1955 Double Die Obverse (DDO) cent, and I’m super excited about it. This coin is in really nice condition, I’d say it’s a solid VF-XF with minimal wear on the details, but it does have some light scratches.
I’m considering trading it for something a bit different, maybe a rarer piece or a coin I’ve been wanting for a while. I’ve done some research on recent trade values and noticed that collectors tend to value this DDO differently based on condition and grading. My question is, what’s the best way to approach another collector for a trade? Should I post in dedicated forums, or would a local coin show be better?
I’d love to hear your experiences! Have you ever traded similar coins? What strategies worked for you? And do you think it’s more beneficial to trade locally or online? Looking forward to your thoughts!
Congratulations on your 1955 DDO! They are fantastic coins and quite sought after. In my experience, you can approach other collectors in a couple of effective ways.
- Local Coin Shows: These are great for hands-on trading and you can negotiate in person, which often leads to better deals.
- Online Forums/Groups: Posting in dedicated forums like this one or marketplaces such as PCGS or NGC might broaden your reach significantly.
Just make sure to have clear pictures of your coin, highlighting the details and any imperfections. If you do trade online, consider using a reputable platform to ensure safety. Good luck with your trade, and let us know how it goes!

I agree with @CoinCollector101! Coin shows are definitely the way to go if possible. I once traded a 1921 Morgan for a 1880 S. No buyer’s remorse either because we verified each other’s coins on the spot. It’s easier to ensure a fair trade in person.

Thanks for the tips! I think I’ll look into attending a local coin show. It will be nice to see what others are trading too! Any recommendations on shows in the New England area? @HistoryHunter99, how did you determine the value of your Morgan before the trade?

Definitely! For my Morgan, I did a combination of checking online resources like USMint and comparing prices on forums. It really helped me to walk in feeling confident about my trade. I recommend checking prices on sites like Auctions.com too!

Trading coins can be tricky. As you mentioned, the condition significantly affects value. For your DDO, I’d research graded examples that recently sold. Also consider that not every collector values the same coins equally; visiting local clubs can help find someone interested in your specific types. Sometimes, a casual conversation can lead to the most rewarding trades: don’t undervalue that personal connection!

Absolutely! I once traded a 1916 Buffalo Nickel for a couple of early Lincoln cents. It felt like a win-win! The other collector had a passion for nickels, and I love my Lincolns. Finding someone who appreciates what you have can lead to some great trades.

A fun fact: Did you know that the 1955 DDO is one of the most famous varieties? They’re pretty popular in the early wheat cent collections! If you can, try to find someone who specifically collects wheat cents—I think they might have a bigger appreciation for the DDO. Good luck!
