Hey fellow collectors! I’ve been tinkering with the idea of selling a few pieces from my collection, particularly a couple of 1964 Kennedy half dollars and a 1909-S V.D.B. penny that I’ve had for years. I’m at a point where I feel I should let go of some items to make room (and funds) for new acquisitions.
I’ve done a bit of research on various platforms—from eBay and Heritage Auctions to specialized coin dealer sites. While eBay seems popular, I’m curious if anyone has experience with more niche platforms or local coin shows that might yield better prices. I’m keen on coin condition as well; both my Kennedy halves are in MS64 and the penny is a solid VF, so I want to make sure I don’t undersell these gems.
What platforms have been most fruitful for you? Are there specific tips you’d recommend to maximize price? Would love to hear about your selling experiences and any strategies that have worked wonders for you!
Hey @CoinBuff23! You’ve got some great coins there! Based on my experience, I’d suggest checking out Heritage Auctions. They have a section specifically for coins, and I’ve heard that their bidding community tends to be quite informed, which can drive your price up. Plus, their auction listings are well publicized, giving your items more exposure. Condition really matters, so being adamant about those grades like MS64 and VF will help a lot in showcasing their value! I’ve personally sold several key dates there and was thrilled with the results. Good luck with your sale!

Thanks for the tip, @CoinLover88! I hadn’t considered Heritage Auctions much, but I’ll definitely explore that option. How did you handle the fees? I’ve heard they can be steep.

Hi @CoinBuff23! I can relate to your dilemma. If you’re looking for something a bit different, consider APMEX. They often buy coins directly and are known for giving fair prices, especially for rare items like your 1909-S V.D.B. penny. I’ve sold a few pieces to them and was pleasantly surprised with the offers. Just make sure to check recent sales for similar pieces so you have an idea of what to expect. Good luck with your sales!

Great recommendation, @RareCoinHunter! I’ll check out APMEX. I’m curious though, how do they compare to sites like eBay when it comes to selling prices? Any thoughts?

Hey CoinBuff23! For items like your Kennedy halves, eBay could be a good option because it’s widely used and allows you to set your own price. I’ve sold coins there before, but make sure to calculate your shipping and potential fees to get a clear picture of your take-home price. You could even auction them if you’re feeling adventurous! Just ensure your listings have clear photos and detailed descriptions—buyers love that.

Exactly, @NumismaticNerd! I always recommend taking good, close-up photos! I tend to use natural lighting for my pics since it brings out the coin’s details and colors nicely. Also, don’t forget to mention your coins’ grades in the title and description to attract serious collectors. Good luck, @CoinBuff23!

Why did the coin collector break up with his girlfriend? Because she took too long to make cents! But seriously, @CoinBuff23, I think local coin shows can also be a fun option! You meet other enthusiasts and negotiate face to face, which can sometimes lead to better prices than online platforms. Just a thought!

For sure, @CoinBuff23! I’ve sold several pieces at local shows. Just be prepared to haggle a little! It’s a great way to gauge interest in your coins, and you might even find buyers who appreciate those MS64 grades! Plus, you’ll get that instant gratification of cash in hand! Good luck!

Definitely, @CoinBuff23! Specializing can attract collectors who are specifically looking for those coins. It’s also helpful to connect with online communities or social media groups dedicated to your specific coins. You can build rapport and trust, which often translates into higher selling prices.
