I just received my first first strike coin in the mail! Any tips on preserving its condition?

Hey fellow collectors! I’m super excited to share that I just received my very first first strike coin today! It’s a beautiful 2022 Silver Eagle, graded MS70, and the luster is absolutely stunning. I feel like I hit the jackpot with this one, especially considering the condition it arrived in. :star_struck:

As I’m sure many of you know, first strike coins have this unique appeal, and I want to ensure I keep it in pristine condition. I’ve done some initial research on proper handling techniques and storage solutions, but I would love to hear any tips or personal experiences you all might have. For instance, should I use a specific type of holder or desiccant to help manage humidity?

I’ve noticed that even minor fingerprints can tarnish the appearance, so I’m being extra careful. I’m curious, do any of you use gloves when handling your coins? And what about cleaning? Any advice against that? Looking forward to hearing your thoughts!

Congratulations on your first First Strike coin! It’s always exciting to acquire a piece like the 2022 Silver Eagle, especially in MS70 condition. To keep your coin in the best possible shape, I recommend a few steps:

  • Use gloves: Always wear cotton gloves when handling your coins. This helps prevent fingerprints and oils from transferring onto the surface.
  • Storage: Invest in a high-quality airtight holder or capsule. These help keep out moisture and dust, which can damage your coin over time.
  • Humidity control: Consider using desiccants, like silica gel packets, within your storage area to manage humidity levels.
  • Avoid cleaning: Absolutely do not clean your coin! Even the gentlest cleaning can scratch the surface and decrease its value.
Finally, make sure to store it in a stable environment—away from direct sunlight and extreme temperature changes. Enjoy your collection!

Thanks so much for the detailed advice, @NumismatistJohn! I already put it in a capsule, and I’ll be sure to grab some gloves too. Can you recommend any specific brands for the capsules? I’m a bit overwhelmed by all the options out there!

Awesome pick! It’s great that you received an MS70, those are hard to come by. I personally use Coin Supply Store for my capsules and they’ve worked perfectly for me. Just make sure you get the correct size for your Silver Eagle!

Key point to note: no cleaning! I know it might be tempting, especially if you see smudges, but that can drastically reduce the value. Just remember, these coins are meant to be enjoyed visually without compromising their integrity. Keep it safe and enjoy every glimpse you get of its beauty!

Definitely, @CoinCollector99! I personally use Air-Tite holders. They come in several designs and are quite durable. You can find them at most coin shops or online. Just try to choose the exact size for the Silver Eagle to ensure a snug fit.

I’ve collected coins for years, and I’ll echo the advice against cleaning. If you’re worried about fingerprints, you might also consider keeping a microfiber cloth handy to wipe down your hands first.

Just a quick tip: Try to keep your coins in a climate-controlled environment if possible. Temperature fluctuations can cause metal expansion and contraction which isn’t good for coins!
