I found an early release with a potential variety but I'm unsure how to attribute it. What are the best resources for proper identification?

Hey fellow collectors! I recently acquired an early release coin, a 1909-S V.D.B. Lincoln penny, and I think I might have stumbled upon a variety. The details are a bit murky, though, and I want to make sure I’m attributing it correctly. The coin has some unique characteristics—mainly the position of the initials on the reverse, which seem slightly off compared to the regular issue. It’s in good condition, maybe a solid VF, but I see a couple of little nicks that might hinder its value down the road.

I’ve done some preliminary research using my trusty Red Book and a few online forums, but I’m still scratching my head on the specifics of attribution. What has been your experience with identifying varieties? Are there any books or online databases you’d recommend for this? Also, have you ever faced similar situations where you thought you might have a rare find but weren’t sure how to definitively identify it?

I’m eager to hear your thoughts and any tips you might have on navigating this confusion. Your expertise could really help me (and others) get a clearer picture. Thanks in advance for your input!

Hi @CoinSeeker92! Sounds like you’ve got an exciting find on your hands! The 1909-S V.D.B. is infamous for its varieties. The best resources I recommend for identifying details are:

  • The definitive guide by PCGS on grading and variations.
  • The NGC forums often have discussions on similar finds which might help you.
  • Your Red Book is great, but don’t forget to consult United States Coins: A Guide to The Early Years for more specifics.
Also, you can try posting clear images of both sides in dedicated collectors’ groups for more insights. Good luck with your attribution process!

Great advice, @CoinWhisperer! I’d also recommend The Official Red Book: A Guide Book of United States Coins, as it’s often updated with new varieties discovered over the years. Sometimes you can get lucky and find a local coin club that hosts identification events where you can have an expert look at your coin in person. It can be super helpful!

Congrats on your find, @CoinSeeker92! I always say that the value of our coins comes not just from their monetary worth but the stories they tell. If you’re unsure about the variety, it might be worth considering sending it to a grading service like PCGS or NGC for authentication. Their experts can provide insights that can confirm its characteristics. VF condition is great too, especially if it can be attributed correctly!

Just to weigh in, @CoinSeeker92, I’ve had similar experiences where I thought I struck gold with odd varieties but turned out to be more common. Always look for die markers specific to various coins! Also, the Overton references can be especially helpful for older coins. Have fun researching!

Thanks for your input, @RandallTheCollector! I’ll definitely take a closer look at the die markers and consider the Overton references. Maybe my find is just a common variation, but I won’t know until I research further. Appreciate your insights!

Agree with @CoinNerd101 on grading! Additionally, remember that the coin’s condition might significantly affect its marketability. And be sure to consider any restoration work, as that definitely impacts the overall value. Definitely keep us in the loop, @CoinSeeker92!

Thank you @VictoryCoin! I’ll be sure to consider restoration effects on the coin’s value. I’ll keep everyone updated once I research more and possibly get it graded. Appreciate all the help!
