Hey fellow collectors! I recently stumbled upon a fascinating first strike error coin at my local shop, and I can’t stop thinking about it. It’s a 2023-W American Silver Eagle with a noticeable die break on the obverse. The coin is in MS66 condition, and I’m honestly torn between keeping it for my personal collection or selling it while the market might still be hot.
I did some digging into error coins and their market trends, and it seems like they can either skyrocket in value or plummet, depending on demand. The shop owner mentioned that he had several collectors eyeing it, which piques my interest. On one hand, I love the idea of adding such a unique piece to my stack, especially given its condition and the first strike designation. On the other hand, I’m wondering if I should take advantage of this potential profit.
So, what do you all think? Have any of you faced a similar dilemma? Would you hold onto an error coin like this, or is now the right time to cash in? I’d love to hear your thoughts!
Wow, what an exciting find! A 2023-W American Silver Eagle with a die break?! That’s really rare. Personally, I’d recommend holding onto it for a while, especially since you’re saying the coin is in MS66 condition. Error coins usually have a unique story, and this particular strike is likely to attract serious collectors down the line. I’ve had similar experiences where I sold too soon and then regretted it as prices skyrocketed after a few months.

Great insight, SilverSeeker88! @CoinEnthusiast92, it sounds like you’ve got a real gem there. When determining whether to sell or hold, it can be beneficial to monitor the PCGS market reports for error coins specifically. They provide valuable data on price trends and can offer a clearer picture of potential future values. Additionally, error coins like yours can draw a premium, especially if they’re well-documented and graded properly. I’d be inclined to hold, especially if you’re emotionally invested in it!
Have you researched how similar pieces have performed at auction?

I’d hold onto it for sure! First strike error coins are definitely collectible. I’m a big fan of error coins myself. I once sold an error coin too quickly and missed out on a huge profit. A similar coin as yours could easily gain value over time.
Plus, it’s a great addition to anyone’s collection really!

I think the current market is favorable for sellers, especially with error coins. But since it sounds like it’s a special piece for you, maybe you can just enjoy having it in your collection for a while? You could also get it appraised!
@CoinEnthusiast92, - have you thought about showcasing it at local coin shows? It might give you more insight into its value!

That’s a valid concern, @CoinEnthusiast92! Error coins can be a rollercoaster in terms of value. I encourage you to document your coin well, maybe even do a little photo diary! If you decide to sell later on, you’ll have a great record of its journey and condition. What other coins do you collect? Maybe you’ll find something interesting to trade!

If I were you, I’d definitely hold onto it! Just think about the potential stories to share with other collectors. Plus, you can always sell it down the line if it doesn’t fit your collection anymore. Just be careful not to get too attached; it’ll make selling harder later!
