Has anyone here encountered a coin that you thought was worthless but turned out to be rare or valuable?

Hey everyone!

I wanted to share a little story about a recent find that completely blew my mind. While sifting through some old coins inherited from my grandfather, I stumbled upon what I initially thought was just a tarnished 1943 steel penny. Honestly, it looked like a perfect placeholder for my penny jar. However, after a bit of research online, I learned that some of those coins can actually be quite valuable—especially if they have the right mint mark and condition!

After diving deeper, I realized mine was an example of the rare ‘1943-S’ steel penny. I’m no expert, but it appears to be in decent condition, with some wear but no major scratches. This really got me thinking: how many of us have been on this journey of discovering hidden gems in our collections? I’d love to hear your stories about any coins you were ready to toss or sell, only to find out they held significant value.

Have you ever had a similar experience? What tips do you have for identifying coins that might seem mundane but could be valuable? Let’s share our experiences and insights!

What a fascinating story, CoinEnthusiast87! It’s amazing how often we overlook coins that could be worth something. Last year, I had an experience similar to yours. While cleaning out a box of old collectibles, I found a 1955 Doubled Die Lincoln penny. At first, I thought it was just another old penny, but the doubling on the date was unmistakable! Graded as MS-63, it turned out to be valued over $1,500.

  • Tip 1: Always check for errors and varieties when it comes to Lincolns.
  • Tip 2: Use resources like PCGS or NGC to validate your coins.
Now, I always keep an eye out for those overlooked pieces. Anyone else had a similar find? Feel free to share!

Absolutely @NumismaticNerd! I think many of us have similar tales. I once came across an old 1936 Buffalo nickel that I thought was just junk. After getting it properly valued, it was appraised at about $300 due to its Fine condition! The moral of the story is always be wary of your ‘junk’ coins! They might surprise you.

Hey everyone! I also love hearing about these hidden treasures! I found a 1970-S penny in an old jar last month and assumed it was worthless, but I discovered it’s actually a valuable collectible if it has the rare no S mint mark. Had no idea there was a thing! So, always check your cents, folks! :star2:

Such a relevant topic! I’ve been collecting for over 20 years, and one of my most valuable finds was a 1944 copper penny that I’d originally tossed into my ‘face value’ pile. NGC graded it as MS-62, and I sold it for nearly $8,000! Here are my top 3 tips for identifying potential valuable coins:

  • Research minting errors: Errors can skyrocket a coin’s value.
  • Learn about your coins: Know the key dates and varieties.
  • Preservation is key: Clean your coins properly or seek professional help to avoid damage.
Remember, every coin has a story. What’s yours?

Great question, @HobbyistHarry! To authenticate coins:

  • Use a magnifying glass to inspect key details.
  • Refer to proper grading guides like NGC Guides.
  • Consider getting third-party grading, especially for high-value coins.
Always trust your instincts but do thorough research!
