Hey everyone! I wanted to share an experience that recently left me scratching my head. I was scrolling through an auction site when I stumbled upon a stunning silver eagle listed as MS70. I was thrilled and quickly placed a bid, imagining how perfect it would fit in my collection. After winning the auction, I eagerly awaited its arrival.
Upon inspection, however, I noticed a couple of blemishes that didn’t seem to line up with the MS70 grade. I spent some time researching what precisely defines that grade and even rechecked the official grading standards. Personally, it felt more like an MS67 at best. I’m a bit bummed out, but it got me thinking: how often does this happen in our community? Have you guys had similar experiences with graded coins that didn’t quite match up upon further inspection?
I’m really curious about your stories! Did you end up returning the coin, or did you find a way to appreciate it despite the discrepancy? Let’s discuss those “almost perfect” coins that didn’t quite make the cut!
Absolutely! I once bought a beautiful 2001 American Silver Eagle that was advertised as an MS70 from a relatively reputable auction house. When it arrived, I was ecstatic—until I noticed some hairline scratches on the reverse side. I was devastated, as the MS70 standard states that there should be no imperfections at all.
- After some back and forth with the seller, they agreed to let me return it.
- I later learned that some sellers will grade coins optimistically just to appeal to buyers.
- As colletors, we have to play the detective sometimes!
In the end, I purchased a different coin, but I’m always more cautious now. Has anyone else used third-party grading services like
PCGS or
NGC? Would love to hear your experiences!

I can relate to this! I once won an MS70 proof coin that looked great on the auction site, but when I got it under a loupe, I found a tiny spot that definitely shouldn’t have been there. I reached out to the seller, but they were pretty much like, ‘Tough luck!’ I ended up contacting PCGS for their thoughts on it. It’s a shame when you can’t trust the grading!

Thanks for sharing your story, @NumismaticNerd89! It’s nice to know I’m not alone in this. I guess trusting sellers can be hit or miss. I really appreciate the advice about using reputable grading services; I’ll definitely consider that in the future!

It’s disheartening when that happens! I had a similar experience with a MS70 1995-W Silver Eagle. It looked fantastic until I examined it under bright light. I found a small milk spot. I contacted the dealer directly and was able to negotiate a partial refund, which helped ease my frustration. Moral of the story—always inspect the coin under good lighting! Anyone else had luck negotiating returns?

Great point, @SilverSeeker! Lighting can really change your perspective on a coin’s quality. I often use a loupe along with a bright LED light to spot imperfections. It’s amazing how many problems appear when you look closely! It’s like discovering buried treasure… or disappointment! Always check those coins thoroughly!

I’ve experienced this too—it was a real letdown! It’s why I lean on third-party grading systems now. If you’re ever unsure, sending a coin in for grading can provide peace of mind. Plus, if it doesn’t come back as expected, at least you have a formal record to go back to the seller. Has anyone else had luck with reselling coins that were misgraded?

Really insightful tips here! I appreciate everyone’s feedback on using services like PCGS and NGC. I’ll definitely save up for that extra peace of mind before my next purchase. It’s so important in our hobby. @RareFindsRicky, I’ve sold a couple of my coins before. Just make sure to be clear about any imperfections in the listing!

Lighthearted question: Do you think ‘MS70’ should come with a return policy? Or is it just a coin flip? Pun intended!

Haha, nice one, @GoldGuzzler! I wish every MS70 came with a guarantee! But honestly, it’s always a risk. The hobby can be a rollercoaster ride!

Excellent advice! Agreeing to a return policy for MS70 listings could really help improve collector trust. Maybe we should petition for it? Always good to dream, right?
