Has anyone ever found a D over S coin in circulation? I often wonder about the chances of stumbling upon something like that in my change

Hey everyone! I’ve been collecting coins for a few years now, and recently I’ve been thinking about those rare finds that make our hobby so exciting, like the D over S coins. I often wonder about the likelihood of actually coming across one of these in circulation. After all, they’re definitely on my bucket list!

From what I gathered in my research, the 1916-S over D dime and the 1937 D over S nickel are considered two of the most famous examples. However, I’m curious if anyone here has ever had the luck of finding one while searching through their change. I mean, my heart would skip a beat if I pulled out a D over S that wasn’t hiding in my collection!

What do you all think? Have any of you had a stroke of luck with rare coins in your pocket? Any stories or tips on how to increase our chances of such exciting finds? I can’t wait to hear your experiences!

Great topic! It’s fascinating to think about the odds of finding a D over S coin in our everyday change. Personally, I haven’t stumbled upon one in circulation, but I have encountered some other interesting finds throughout my collecting journey. Back in 2021, I found a 1955 double die penny in a $10 roll of pennies. The thrill of finding something rare is unmatched! As for D over S coins, if you’re really keen on finding one, you might want to consider searching through some older coins, maybe even from coin shops or estate sales. The rarer coins tend to circulate less, but who knows? Keep your eyes peeled, and you might get lucky one day!

Thanks for sharing! That double die penny is a gem! I’ll definitely take your advice and check out some estate sales. I guess I just need to keep looking at my coins more closely. Have any tips on what to look for specifically?

I think the best chance is to look through bags of coins that were collected over a long time. My grandpa used to hoard coins, and he had tons of oldies just sitting around. I managed to find a 1937 D over S nickel that had barely seen the light of day! It’s almost like treasure hunting. Circulated conditions can be tough as they’re often worn down, but it just adds to the story!

Specific things to look for: When checking for D over S coins, you’ll want to inspect the mintmark placement closely. For instance, on the 1916-S over D dime, the D is partially visible, so look at the lower left of where the mintmark should be. PCGS has a great article detailing the specifics. Also, remember that condition is key. A coin in UNC could be valuable!

So helpful, thanks! I’ll definitely check out that PCGS link. It seems like knowing about the mintmarks can really help narrow down the search. Who knew coin hunting could be this detailed? I love it!

I’ve never found a D over S coin, but I did find a 1970-S silver quarter in circulation! That was epic! It’s amazing what you can find now and then. Keep searching!

Anyone heard of people actually selling their D over S coins for much? I’m just curious how the market responds to these finds in modern times. @CoinCollectingGuru, have you had any experience with selling?

Great question! I have sold a few rare coins, and yes, the market can vary a lot.

  • The condition of the coin is vital.
  • Market demand fluctuates based on collectors’ interest.
  • And sometimes, the timing of the sale can hit the sweet spot for maximum profit.
Definitely something to keep in mind if you stumble upon a rare find! If you’re considering selling, getting it graded is usually a good first step.

I love the thrill of finding rare coins! While I haven’t found a D over S, I did get a 2x2 holder filled with old coins at a garage sale for just a few bucks. One turned out to be a 1909-S V.D.B. penny—absolutely worth it! Garage sales can be a hidden treasure trove.

Regarding the D over S coins: It’s relatively rare to find them in circulation anymore due to their collectible nature. With most collectors aware of their value, they tend to keep them locked away. I’d love to hear more experiences from collectors who have found them—definitely share if you score one! @CollectorMaven, let us know if you find more hidden gems!
