Hey everyone! I’ve been seriously bitten by the variety bug lately. I’m primarily into classic US coins, especially those with the Deep Cameo finish. I recently acquired a 1995 Proof Kennedy half dollar that just dazzles with its mirror-like fields and frosty devices. Seeing the difference in quality got me thinking about expanding my collection into deeper waters, but I feel a bit lost navigating the world of Deep Cameo varieties.
What are some notable Deep Cameo varieties you all would recommend? I’ve done a bit of digging and noticed that certain years produce exceptional examples, but I’d love to get insights from fellow collectors here. Specifically, I’m curious about the 1964 and 1976 Proof sets – I hear they have some real gems!
I’d appreciate any thoughts on coin conditions too. How do you determine which Deep Cameo examples hold the most value or visual appeal? Let’s share our experiences and tips, because I genuinely want to make informed purchases.
Hey CoinEnthusiast123! It’s great to see your excitement for expanding into Deep Cameo varieties! As someone who’s been collecting for years now, I can share a few notable coins that are definitely worth hunting for. The 1964 Proof set is iconic, and within that set, the Deep Cameo examples of the Kennedy half dollar are particularly stunning. You’ll also want to look at the 1976 Proof quarters—those really pop with their contrast!
- 1976-S Kennedy Half Dollar
- 1970-S Proof Lincoln Cent
- 1986-S Statue of Liberty Commemorative Dollar
Each of these coins often exhibits remarkable depth and luster. When considering value, always check the
PCGS or
NGC databases for their grading standards. Plus, I find that collecting coins that are already graded makes it easier to verify quality. Happy hunting!

I completely agree with you, CoinGuru1984! The 1964 and 1976 sets are definite highlights. I remember picking up a 1976-S Proof set a few years back and the Deep Cameo finish really stood out at the time. It’s like the coin is alive! The contrast between the fields and devices is just mesmerizing. If you’re looking to diversify even further, consider also checking late 90s and early 2000s coins; you might find some surprisingly good examples too!

Great suggestions! I’d like to add that the 1999-S and 2000-S Proof Sacagawea dollars also have some lovely Deep Cameo examples. These can sometimes slip under the radar, but when you find a good one, it’s a treasure! Check out the US Mint site for past releases too, which can be really helpful in seeing what might be out there. Plus, the variety in designs can really spice up your collection!

Thanks for the insights, everyone! These suggestions are exactly what I was looking for! It’s encouraging to see so many collectors excited about Deep Cameo coins. The 1999-S Sacagawea dollar hadn’t crossed my mind, so I’ll make a note of that. I’ve been trying to understand more about what can increase a coin’s value, so the discussion around grading and certification is super helpful!

Hey there! Aside from the varieties mentioned, don’t sleep on the 1968-S & 1971-S Proof set coins! Their Deep Cameo examples are stunning. I once stumbled upon a 1971-S Lincoln cent that blew my mind. The mirror finish really makes such a difference in appearance. Investing in these coins can definitely pay off in the long run, and they’re beautiful additions to any collection!

Why did the coin collector get kicked out of the casino? Because he kept calling for ‘high relief’! But seriously, investing in Deep Cameo coins is like hitting the jackpot sometimes; keep looking and you might just hit it big!

Looking for value? It helps to know how the market has trended over the years. For example, the 1995 Proof coins seem to have a consistent demand due to their quality. I recommend checking auction sites to see what they sell for, or even browsing some active collector forums for insights. Some coins can be undervalued, and you can snag them at good prices if you keep an eye out!

Great point, ValueSeeker57! I’ll definitely keep vigil on auction sites as you suggested. The value of these coins can really fluctuate, so it’s vital to stay informed. And by the way, has anyone mentioned conditions? What grades do you all consider must-haves for a coin to truly shine as a Deep Cameo?

For sure! A good starting point for determining quality is looking for coins rated PR69DCAM or higher. Those grades are generally where you’ll find the real ‘wow’ factor. Of course, anything rated a perfect PR70DCAM is ideal but few examples are out there. Just remember, it’s not always about the grade; the aesthetic quality can be just as important. Happy hunting everyone!
