Can you share any interesting stories about your first encounter with an 1895-O? Mine was an accidental find at a flea market!

Hey fellow collectors! I wanted to share an amazing story about my first encounter with the elusive 1895-O Morgan dollar. I stumbled upon it completely by accident at a flea market, buried in a box of mixed coins. At first, I thought it was just another common date, but as I examined it closer, my heart raced—there it was, the '95-O!

The coin had a bit of wear, probably a Fine to Very Fine condition, but the details were still surprisingly sharp. I had done some research prior, so I recognized its significance. I ended up haggling with the vendor, and after a few tense minutes, I walked away with it for a mere twenty bucks—can you believe that? I still reminisce about the thrill of that find!

Now I’m curious to hear your stories! Have you had similar chances to snag a rare piece? What was the condition like, and how did you feel when you realized what you’d found? I’d love to hear your experiences and any tips you’ve picked up along the way!

What an incredible story! My first encounter with an 1895-O Morgan dollar was also a thrilling experience. It was at an estate sale—some of the family members had no idea about the coins they were selling, which always makes me a bit sad but also excited for collectors. I spotted one in a small velvet-lined box and felt my heart race. The coin was in Extra Fine condition, and the luster was still evident. After some bargaining, I managed to get it for $50. It’s one of my prized possessions now! I can still hear the seller scoffing at the idea of it being worth more than a few bucks—if only they knew! Have you had a chance to get it appraised since your find? I’d love to see pictures if you have them!

That’s awesome! Finding an 1895-O is no small feat! Whereas I’ve been collecting for over a decade, my first 1895-O was at a coin show. I paid a bit more than you—around $200—but it was in AU condition with minimal wear. I still remember the rush of handing over the cash. One interesting thing about the 1895-O is its low mintage, which makes it highly sought after. If you’re looking for tips, I recommend checking out PCGS for more detailed info. Happy collecting!

Thanks for sharing your story, @CoinNerd99! It seems like we’re both lucky when it comes to finding rare coins unexpectedly. I haven’t had a chance to get it appraised yet, but I definitely plan to. I’ll make sure to post pictures once I do!

I recall my first 1895-O as if it were yesterday! I bought it online during a late-night bidding spree. I got super lucky with an auction starting at just $20, and later I found it was in VF condition. The seller seemed oblivious to its value too, which made it even better! I’ve often thought about what other treasures might be lurking online. Do you guys ever find good coins in those auctions or have preferred reliable sites you check?

I mainly use NGC for auctions and find their catalog really helpful for grading too. I agree that some sellers might not know what they have. Have you ever tried reaching out to local dealers about potential trades? That can sometimes lead to great finds without the risk of online bidding wars!

Flea market finds are the best! You never know what hidden gems you’ll discover. I once found a bunch of silver coins in a coffee can at a flea market—it was better than finding gold! I’m curious, @CoinHunter92, have you ever gone back to that flea market to see if any other treasure waits for you?

Haha, @SilverAddict! That would be awesome if I could find more treasures! I actually plan to revisit soon. Who knows what I might find next? Fingers crossed!

Great find! The thrill of finding a coin like the 1895-O can’t be matched. My first encounter was much less exciting—I found mine in a collection my grandfather had left me. I thought it was just an old dollar until I did some research and realized its significance. It’s in MS condition and one of my cherished family heirlooms now. Does anyone else have tales of family history with your coins?

I love hearing all these stories! Coin collecting is more than just an investment; it’s also about the stories behind them. With my first 1895-O, I found it in a mixed-grab bag from a local dealer. At first, I thought it was too damaged, but after closer inspection, I realized it was an XF with a beautiful toning that adds character. It’s funny how our perceptions of coins evolve. Have any of you had a similar experience?

Congrats! An accidental find at a flea market is a collector’s dream. My first was at a pawn shop, of all places! I came across a worn 1895-O for just $15. It’s been a learning experience since, as I had to research its value and potential grades afterward. Condition really determines its worth—understanding that has saved me money in the long run. Did anybody else start collecting coins this way?
