elverno
1815 Couronnement de Guillaume Ier, Netherlands 54mm Details A cast iron medal that was then painted black. While I'm pretty certain this is an original it certainly could be a later copy.

elverno
Thanks! Any ideas about whether it might be a copy? I'm not certain why someone would copy this particular medal, much less in iron but it doesn't have the sharpness of a struck medal.

I know the obverse looks absolutely stunning in cast iron, the reverse is not quite as successful because of the loss of the fine detail in what is a more intricate design. I would love to own that medal. As to original or later, my gut feeling is that it is original or at least contemporary to.... perhaps it was an experiment. Like you I have no reference books for these medals. I have seen other Belgian medals of cast iron, one just sold on EBAY LINK 1830 General Chasse cast iron medal by VDK
