Redemption Periods

Continued from "Coins from Montenegro to come soon?"

Banque de France has a schedule of redemption for older notes, I am not sure what it is now, but I think the last Franc denominated notes can be redeemed until 2008 or so.

Until 2012 - like the pre-euro notes from Finland, Greece and Italy.

France has been even harsher on coins, I believe now none of them can be redeemed.

Yes, as I mentioned before, the redemption period for French franc coins is over. Portugal was the first euro country where that period ended for the pre-euro coins (2003); in 2004 Belgium, Greece and Luxembourg followed, in 2005 it was France, and the end of this year is the deadline for Dutch gulden coins.

These redemption deadlines do not necessarily apply to coins and notes which were not in circulation any more when the euro cash was introduced, of course. Germany, for example, has an unlimited redemption policy - every coin and note ever issued in the Federal Republic of Germany can always be exchanged into current legal tender. Austria has a similar policy but applies it to the last series of ATS issues only. Older notes such as the 1000 ATS Suttner, 500 ATS Ressel, 100 ATS Kauffmann did recently, or will soon, lose their value.

Here's a link to a PDF "booklet" issued by the "Banco de Portugal":

Interesting document! Well, I don't really understand all the text :ninja: but it covers many questions "around" the euro and the escudo-euro changeover.

By the way, Slovenia plans a redemption period of ten years for coins, and an unlimited one for notes. At least that is what their changeover plan says ...
