Interesting Story about a 19th Century Forger

At our club meeting this evening there was a sidebar discussion about an infamous 19th century Italian forger. The man was quite good at his work and many of the pieces were sold as genuine over the years. Eventually many of the dies made it to the Smithsonian. Then, the story goes that a US dealer wanted to publish all the known information about this forger but he was persuaded by some European dealers not to do so. Supposedly there are too many famous collections with forged coins in them to make it a palatable subject.

The name is actually legendary, no one knows for sure. The name most often given is Tardoni while he was in Italy. After he went to Paris, the story is that he changed his name to Ciani.

But the origins are mere legend, the dies and the fakes from those dies are quite real.
