That's neat. If it were a 5 euro I'd think about it as a gift for my granddaughter. One of them loves the Hello Kitty stuff.

The side depicted on the right reminds a lot of a previous Monnaie de Paris series, with the same "magic wand" design. Except that it said "il était une fois" (once upon a time there was) instead of the new "comme un rêve" (like a dream). And that older series had images of fairy tales, like Snow White, Alice in Wonderland, and Pinocchio ...

On the one had, I agree with Art that it might be a neat idea for kids (at a lower price). My other hand, however, wants to fall off laughing at the absurdity of Hello Kitty on a coin. :ninja:

Don't particularly like such "painted" coins anyway, and no, I don't need a "Hello Kitty" coin either. :ninja: Then again, are these pieces all that different from an Aladdin or Sleeping Beauty coin? Here are some (links to) images of the previous series that I mentioned ...

Aladdin:

Hardly any "Hello Kitty" coin will be readily available in Europe, by the way. Just like those China theme coins made by the Monnaie de Paris, the Kitty pieces will almost exclusively be marketed in Asia ...

Those are all ugly.

Agreed. I do like the "magic wand" design, so had the mint used that for a different purpose (Humptieth Anniversary of the French Association of Professional Magicians :ninja: or something like that), it would have been nice. But the obverses? Brrr ... and the coloring makes them even worse.

I don't. :ninja: As far as the designs are concerned, well, there is no accounting for taste. However, what I particularly dislike about these Kitty pieces is that they do not have anything to do with the issuing mint/country. Collector coins that cannot be had at face value are bad enough - but in the US for example they are at least related to the country's history, achievements, etc. Similarly, if the Monnaie de Paris issues coins that commemorate the Tour de France anniversary, some Napoleonic law or even Grand Cru wines, that is fine IMO. I will not always buy them (way too expensive) but when a piece is nice and my wallet is not empty, so to say, I may get one.

Those Kitty thingies however ... (For those who usually do not check the "World" Forum, here http://coinpeople.com/index.php?showtopic=5835 are some more pictures.) Nah, these won't end up in my collection. ;)
