If you have invested last year you would have gained signficantly but right now it's difficult to say. All it matters is how fast can oil prices go down or how stable can it be, or how fast the war can end. That's how gold prices are related to, sadly. Especially if the Bird Flu mutates and begins transmition between humans. Not much good if you get bird flu yourself. I personally wouldn't give gold much thought at a time like that. I'd be more interested in hoarding up food, and other essentials afterall food is far more important. If i saved up enough food so i had plenty surplus then i dare say i'd end up with some gold from those that have realised that they forgot to get any food.
