Dengshan
Hi guys! hope everything is going well with you! A question: Do you prefer circulated or uncirculated coins? I know it can be quite weird, but personally I prefer circulated coins. I feel they have a "history" on their patina and they have a real connection with the State and the People where they were minted... although this, I agree in taking care and slabbing these old circulated coins. What's your opinion?Hugs!
ikaros
I agree on the sense of history that comes with a circulated coin; it is a coin that has done its job. And some coins actually wear in an attractive way - the late Victorian coppers come to mind, especially the final portrait issues from 1895-1901. thedeadpoint
Great question. I like good looking coins. In all my series, I go for the best looking coin at a reasonable cost. Sometimes that cost means I get a very nice, uncirculated coin. Sometimes it means I get a heavily circulated coin. Regardless of the grade or price, it is something that looks beautiful to me. So, to answer your question: depends! I love both.
Art1.2
For me the circulated coins hold a greater feeling of history. The exception to this is modern series that are cost effective in Proof or MS.
frank
An uncirculated coin shows detail that (sometimes) I've never even seen on that particular coin --I'm thinking of early American large cents. That's really exciting --to be able to see all the little bits, the small die breaks, the quirks of serifs on engraved letters and numbers. At the same time, a coin that has aged gracefully --without too much wear and without scratches or dings-- is a beautiful thing. Old copper and old silver have a priceless tone that only time can give.
Dengshan
In general agree with you guys and thanks for your interesting opinions. Actually a proof coin must be "perfect": it has been minted for that reason, but for old coin (and in general I prefer old coins) I like something not "too perfect". Usually would prefer a XF or AU rather than a MS... (in a slab... ) Hugs and best wishes to all!
UncleBobo
I like both. I have two Morgan dollars that I absolutely love. One is uncirculated and proof like; the other is somewhere between good and fine and has an S that someone punched into the reverse long ago. Both are beautiful, but in different ways
