1799 George III Farthing Question

Hi,

Just purchased a small group of farthings and a 1799 G III one was in the batch. Never owned one of these before and have a question about its edge.
Was it reeded? The one I have is very worn and appears to have a pattern in the middle of the edge. At first I thought it was a cast mark, but looking closer it is patterned. Is it the remains of a reeded edge or similar?

Thanks

The Farthings of 1799-1807 were produced with diagonally grained edges. I believe that is what your photo shows. There were proofs struck in 1799 with plain edges. Also some silver and gold proofs were struck. Ref:Coincraft 2000 pages 609-610.
