5 and 10p replacement program by Royal Mint

The royal Mint has started taking cupro-nickel 5 and 10 pence pieces out of circulation.

which will start to make pre 2012 coins scarcer it might be a good time to start hoarding. In a way it's a shame because pre 2008 coins will disappear with the various busts of the Queen and I bet it won't be long before the copper coins start to go future collectors will only find Ian Rank-Broadley busts of the Queen in pocket change and I still miss the pre-decimal collecting days when you could find Victorian coins and pre-1947 silver coins in your change.

I think eventually all countries will be doing this. Some will reprocess the materials while others will just sell them as bulk scrap.

I find the 5p coins in dime rolls in roll searching in the USA. 20p coins substitute for nickels - I have several dozen of them - I really don't have a problem getting a coin worth 30 cents for a mere 5 cents. Less often I find 1p coins in cent rolls, only have maybe a dozen of them over the years.
