Roger
My Guess, and it's only a guess---Gas bubbles trapped between the copper plate and zinc core which is common place on this type of cent--or--Machine doubling which happens at the time the coin is struck. tommyd
Looks like machine doubling, although the 2 seems kinda' funky

just carl
I too was going to say machine doubling from worn out dies. Until I noticed the 2. That is not just from a worn die. That 2 is moved way to f ar over. Sure looks like a bit of Doubled Die. How is the rest of the coin? Any signs of doubling in the face, lettering, etc? eddio
there's is some doubling in the lettering but nothing close to a double die
