jlueke
Its likely a modern reproduction based on a Seleucid piece perhaps
Jono.vonmollendorff
What would make it a reproduction? and is there any way to tell?
jlueke
Like you say the markings are close but never the same. The style and weight can be give aways as well. What's the closest coin you found? Where did you get this coin?
Jono.vonmollendorff
The closest i seem to get is Antiochos Vii tetradrachm coin, the reverse side seems to be correct, there is even the what looks like the palm tree behind the eagle. The bust seems to be almost exact except the color piece is slightly diferent? I aquired the the coin during a trip to Isreal a few years ago. what should the weight of this coin be? regards
jlueke
Seleucids used the Phoenician standards so a tet should be around 14.4 grams. There are a LOT of imitations sold o tourists in Israel and Lebanon.
