Let's celebrate Columbus

Art

Recommended Posts

The Columbus Day holiday is coming in a about 10 days so I thought a thread celebrating Columbus would be a good idea. I put it in the Coin forum but post images of whatever you'd like.

Here's a BEP Souvenir Sheet with a vignette of Columbus and restrikes of the 1893 Columbian Exposition Stamp.

I don't have an image of my Columbian half dollars and they're resting in the bank at the moment. Maybe someone else has one.

Say a little prayer. Columbus Day is October 12, my birthday. Well, it was October 12 until Richard Nixon created a three day weekend and allowed it to move each year to ensure a proper holiday.

So I'm putting some dusting supplies on top of my file cabinet and I notice this box that I had totally forgotten about. It's just sitting there gathering dust so open it I must. Well inside is a very nice very thick set of bronze medals. Turns out it's the Official Caravel Bronze Collection celebrating the Quincentennial Anniversary of the Discovery of America.

Probably not too much but I do have a few boxes of stuff that I haven't looked at in a few years. Maybe when I have time I'll check them out.

NOT! Can't find my pics on the hard drive and my omni coins pics are "?"!

But of course had Columbus not been lost on his voyage we'd all be speaking ...............Uh! What would we be speaking?

Here's my only Columbus coin:

I really like these coins. One of the very first Commemoratives I ever owned. That's probably true for a fair number of us. Great coin.

Here are a few I imaged today:

This is a nice series of coins. In fact I've been looking at the $5.00 gold coin on ebay. Not too bad price wise and I really like the design a lot.

It's a really nice set for many reasons, and quite attractive designs all around. I have a 6-coin set in the cherry wood box, and I bought them maybe 7 or 8 or 9 years ago and I think I paid about $300 for it, and everyone at the time thought I was nuts!

Good timing. The commemorative sets were bargain priced for quite a long time. But with gold the way it is lately -- not anymore.

It is true. The first commem that I bought (my dad gave me a few of his father's) was this one. Not as nice as this coin but I still like it. I wonder why that was the first commem and why it's one of the easiest to buy...

Great items! Sterling silver spoons from the expo are not that common - many were silverplate, including those by the misleadingly named "US Sterling" company.

Well you had me doubting myself for a minute but the old "flex test" didn't let me down on this old spoon.

The handle of the spoon was real limber as it should be for silver but I went ahead

and looked at the hallmark---"R.Wallace and Sons--Sterling" even looked up the pattern (Waverley)

which is correct for the period. Anyway thanks for making me look and honing my skills!
