Paul III(1534-1549) Jesus driving the merchants from the Temple.

O. .PAVLVS.III.PONT.MAX. Bust right.
R. Jesus driving the merchants from the Temple.
R.In exergue DOMVS MEA / DO(mvs).OR(ationis). (My house is a house of prayer)
Bronze 32.5mm 18g .CNORP-307
Attributed to Valerio Belli, this is a restrike, which I believe is 18th or 19th century, as the 20th century restrikes are from either new or reworked dies. A 20th Century restrike Mine looks to be from an older die. Mind I am no expert on papal medals.

St.Paul is depicted with sword & book on the papal vestment, St Peter probably was depicted on the other side but the engraver(or the Pope himself) probably picked St. Paul to be shown because the Pope was named after Paul.

EDIT 2013 July. One, similar condition, from the same die, listed as 19th century restrike sold at ArtCoins Roma > Auction 7 in May for 205 USD

Very nice medal. Great detail in the engraving carried through in a strong strike. The color is great too. The information you provided really helped me to enjoy looking at the image. Thank you.

Almost all papal medals I see are restrikes. I wonder sometimes if there are any original strikes :bwink: .

Beautiful medal.
