It looks like he copied the wrong coin. It links to the 1773 Halfpenny. (I did that posting the wrong coin myself but luckily caught it.)

I think I ended up posting the wrong picture a few times and ended up going back and catching it. I hope I caught all of mine. Just wondering would it be better next time to post a link and the picture on the next pci to catch that?

Assuming that's a serious question, school is OK. Had to miss yesterday's class because of work piling up on my desk. My boss has been MIA with pneumonia for 3 weeks, so things are starting to get crazy around the office. After work, I drove 4 hours to DC. Then went to a job fair up there this morning to talk to two companies. (Nothing like doing a job search in the worst job market in generations...) Then drove 4+ hours back to Suffolk where I'm now working on a HW due tomorrow. I'll hand that one in person unfortunately.

 

To answer your real question: tomorrow night and thursday night - when I'll be making the next rounds of PCI. Any feedback after the first?

Still working on getting Round 1 all posted. The Coppers go up for vote tonight. That leaves Silver and Gold for Round 1. Also Round 2 of the first catagories should be ready to post by this weekend. I'm focusing on getting Round 1 of everything up before moving to Round 2 stuff. Really need that PCI2011 Archives subforum soon. The main forum will soon be overloaded and then folks have a hard time finding the voting items.

 

George, just keep focused on school -- that is the real life priority here. PCI is moving ok and will continue to move along at a reasonable pace - I hope. When you're ready to take it over again just holler! Sorry to hear about the stress at work. Hope your boss is ok quickly.

Next years maybe a little more scheduled time between submission and closing. It does need to keep on a schedule though. After submission closing I was even thinking I should have added this or that. Maybe add to or change the description. With me the problem was me. I kept meaning to do it tomorrow then it almost came down to the wire.

 

Not sure if it would end up being too cluttered for submissions, but maybe if the picture and the direct link instead of embedded link may help some on submissions. I was lucky spotting the same number was in two different coin submissions. If not I would have probably missed another mistake when I looked back. Not sure but it may helped organizing the format some. Instead of having to copy an embedded link you would have the direct link.

 

And George yep, I was wondering how your school was going.

An add on to above. For the contestants. I don't think it could or should be required but I really would have liked seeing more information on the coins, medals, tokens especially the more obscure ones. I've seen some really nice write ups on them in the forums and a short version for this would be nice.

Mark, I'm sure that you're aware that you have a window between announcing the submissions and closing the threads that allows you to keep some focus and interest. If you spread it out too long it looses both. Add to that the fact that a large percentage of the folks will do their submissions at the last moment anyway and ????

 

 

The original PCIs had you submit the picture of the coin as an image. That made for a quick nightmare with different sizes and locations. Some photos disappeared between submission an contest or rounds of the contest. I think the omnicoin requirement is very good (not my idea by the way). But even with that I've had to go to omnicoin and search several members databases to find the correct coin for their submission. (Omnicoin search is horrible by the way).

On using omnicoin that should stay. Makes it look a lot better. I was just thinking instead of this for submissions.

Like I said a draw back is the room a single submission thread would take up. So having the pics I'm split on. Figured it would be a fast way of seeing the wrong coin was listed if the numbers don't match. When you are submitting it really sticks out. And hopefully would be caught by the submitter. Also I thought for the persons running the contest it would allow them just to do a straight copy and paste instead of having to modify each submission. (After submissions this is one of the "tokens" I thought I should have added. Along with the Bonus Texas token and a few others.)

 

BTW I like your elephant token. It has history.

I do understand that the pics would help on error of submission but the type of submission threads would have to change. Take a look at the copper or silver submission threads. Copper - 8 groups - 72 entries. That would not be very manageable in a single thread. Perhaps we'd have to more to each group having its own thread. So Copper.Group1 Entry Thread, etc.

 

Hopefully next year we will have even more entries and perhaps a change in catagories.

I understand your direction on this George and in fact I agree with it. I'm thinking more along the lines of possible changes to some of the 8 groups within each metal. Of course as times move on perhaps there'll be broader participation in some of these and so folks won't have their coins alone in a group or competing with only their own entries. I know that there was a good amount of time before this got moving for folks to think and comment and a few did. It's just the same old same old. I like the breakdown for PCI2011 and the entries for copper, silver and gold are certainly plentiful.

 

It's a great competition so far and as we move into future rounds and get voting on silver and gold, it will get even better. I love the copper section. WOW! What neat coins and medals. I've always been partial to copper and have a bunch in my collection but I'm still quite restricted compared to what I see entered here. I'm actually going to have to rethink some of my collection as a result of this contest. Way to go!!!

Mark Stilson: Art did encourage people to add descriptions, to explain the significance of the coin and put it in some context someone who doesn't collect them will appareciate. Though I think I was the only person did anything more substantial than an attribution. I wonder how many people have read them. In fact I'd be interested to know if anyone's vote was swayed because of my description. If so, it might encourage more people to do so in the future.

 

Art, some suggestions: I wouldn't post a thread for coins that are just going to get a bye that round. Or if you do, don't bother with a vote but just post the coin and say it gets a bye. (Actually that might be better so someone doesn't wonder what happened to their coin.)

 

Also, I like the way you combined two polls for the Other Precious Metals category; I'd like to recommend that you have one thread for each group (e.g., one for Copper 5). The number of threads that have to be slogged through with two coins per thread to vote is overwhelming. (I typically navigate this site by using the "View New Content" feature, and when I get two pages back and it's a page and a half of voting threads with no post (but they show up as new content because someone voted) it's a bit time consuming to go through them all and make sure that that is _all_ that actually happened.) This would cut down on the sheer number of threads without arbitrarily reducing the number of entries, and it would save you time locking all the threads later.

i dont think my rarity ones helped as they were put with one of my strongest entries in a 3 way poll. in future if people are gettign byes can we avoid getting same person matchups (i had 5 coins in total in 2 categorys facing each other, 2 of which were quirkier rarity entires)

Yep, they tried getting more. I was just wishing people would have done it more. Some of the coins I was thinking wow, that is an interesting coin, and wishing it more would have had more info. And btw it did sway my vote.

I'm sorry about that Scott. I usually tried to avoid self matchups until they became impossible to avoid. In fact that's the case with your 3 way match up. They would have had to face each other either that way or in three separate contests but when you have only three entries in group there's little choice in how to handle it. I had a similar group of entries myself. More submissions by more people is the main way this can be addressed.
