BKB Posted September 2, 2011 Report Share Posted September 2, 2011 These were artificially patinated by the mint. Like medals. That patina normally remains intact and protects the coin. I had one with serious rot issues, but the areas not touched by corrosion were like new and red/brown. This one, if original Novodel, has serious environmental damage.
