constanius
A SILVER MEDAL FOR THE WESTMORELAND PARLIAMENTARY ELECTION OF 1818, (candidature of Henry Brougham) with suspension loop as issued: Obv: Bust facing r, signed on the truncation MILLS F. Legend HENRY BROUGHAM. Rev: In eight lines, within a wreath of oak leaves and acorns, TO THE / PATRIOTIC / INCORRUPTIBLE AND / UNBOUGHT FREEHOLDERS / OF THE COUNTY OF / WESTMORELAND / IV JULY / MDCCCXVIII By George Mills BHM# 970 AE N. 36mm, not listed in Silver. Henry Peter Brougham, Baron Brougham and Vaux, 1778-1868, politican & Lord Chancellor: In 1818 Henry Brougham, though he was already a member of Parliament for Winchelsea, decided to stand for one of the county seats in Westmoreland. The ensuing contest, the first in Westmoreland since 1774! found on Brougham's side only the Quakers, a few landowners like the Earl of Thanet and some of the Crackenthorpes, and 'the voters of the yeoman class whom the influence of Lowther castle(local lords of the manor) had failed to subjugate'. PS Westmorland tends to be the modern spelling.
