An Incredible Half Dollar Haul at my Credit Union

Last Friday I was making a withdrawal at the local credit union and did my usual spiel of "do you have any half dollars, Ike Dollars or $2 bills. The teller replied that she did have some halves, and I asked her if she had any that were dated before 1970. Her response was "Yeah, but I don't think you will want it because it is old and dirty" I took it anyway and got a 1964 90%er. She said she had $340 worth of halves in the vault if I wanted them. I told her I would think about it, because quite bluntly I have never had luck with half dollar roll searches. On a lark this morning while driving by the credit union I decided to give it a shot...

I am very damned glad I did. The first roll produced two 1963 Frankies, then nearly entire rolls of 40% halves - getting near the end of the 34 rolls I found the Walkers. A grand total of 42 40% halves, and 9 90%ers including a 1942, a 1943, a 1944, five 1963 Frankies, and two 1964's. Then one of the rolls had particularly shiny halves, there were ten proofs from 1981 and 1982.

I think I might convert over from cent box searching now!

PS when I went back and was bagging up the rejects I found two more 40%ers that didn't stand out the first time. Now I have to go back and check the whole thing all over again :yahoo::shock:

With the price of silver, it's well worth the extra effort.

Did not had very much luck getting a box last time. But just ordered two boxes of halves. I had been thinking about it but your post pushed me over the edge. Are you proud of yourself.

The only other time I searched halves, $100 worth, I had zilch for luck and never bothered again. These were truly virgin halves - had been deposited recently. Most, like 95% were dated as late as 1976, and there are quite a few BU examples of the late 1960's and early 1970's. So someone must have cashed in their stash.

Late 1960s? Those would be 40 percent silver. Your search worked out better than you realized (or you misspoke).

Indeed, quite a few of the '67-69 dated coins are BU or nearly so. When I sorted them out by dates, most of them were either 1967 or 1969 with lesser amounts of 1968 dated coins. There were only a couple of each of the 1965 and 1966 dates.

Well, zip. I think that's the last time I order any. I'm staying with asking at the bank if they have any. Only thing I kept was a few clean ms ones for the grand kids. The last ones I ordered had various coin tubes. These were all machine rolled.

That has been my usual "luck" with halves. The only other time I got any in quantity, I bought $100 worth and not a goodie in the lot - but a lot of casino beaten up pieces. Unless I smell silver in the tray or I ask for "halves dated before 1970" I won't take them. Somewhere in the past 3-4 years I recall getting a silver, well 40% anyway Ike from 1973 that had slipped into circulation.

The last time I had a haul it was asking if they had any. I can't remember well, but I think it was 3 rolls of 40% and 1 90% Kennedy's out of a couple hundred in rolls. Never have gotten any Franklin's or standing liberty's.

Coin induced excitement + a dram of Talisker will do that.

Great find. :clapping:

  • 2 weeks later...

So what is the melt/collector value of your search?

Just ran it through the calculator.

42 40% halves = $236.55

9 90% halves = $123.96

So that's $360.51 melt value. The Franklins and Walkers probably will carry a numismatic premium, and (depending on the condition) so will the proofs. So for a conservative estimate, $380-400 for $30.50 face value. If that's not an amazing haul, I don't know what is!
