Imperial Banknotes anyone?

Not really my thing (in fact not at all...I know next to nothing about them).

However...a collector in Finland contacted me through the RNS looking to sell his collection of over 100 russian banknotes from 1807 to 1909. He showed an image of a 5 ruble 1817, and also mentioned 5 ruble 1807, 1812, 1819, 1822, etc.

Before he locates an auction house he wanted to know if anyone here might be interested in some/all of these.

If anyone's interested please send me a PM and I'll send you his contact info.

Yes Steve,

Love to see the list and proposal of prices ..or price for everything?

Will contact you.

I really know nothing more than what I posted. It was a general inquiry from him with a couple of photos (no prices). I don't know the guy, have no idea what he's got, but can provide his email address to interested parties, which he's happy for me to do.

Steve,

Unless you have someone that is selling the banknotes for $100 for the whole lot, please don't tease those of us who are broke as it is. I need another sub-collection like I need to develop a drug addiction.

Sincerely,

Nick

Are these expensive??

The prices for these notes in general, not just from this guy, are expensive. Notes from before 1898 are extremely hard to find because they all got burned sometime in the period between 1896 and 1897 (literally, millions and millions of paper roubles were collected by the government as a way to control inflation and massive burnings were arranged to get rid of them) and all the people who turned notes in got in exchange the new series notes, which were 1898-issue notes). So basically any remaining notes on today's market that are from before 1898 are all notes that for some reason did not make it to that fire, and would have been void after 1898 when the new series was used. These notes don't come to the market too often, and when they do prices can go anywhere.... I mean all it takes is two people who really really want that early 1890s rouble or 1880s rouble to send prices flying. I'm not even sure how many of those notes survive today, or what a real "fair" price for them is. If you look at Krause, for example, most of those notes will have blanks in the price estimates because they can sell for anything. The Finnish collector can pretty much ask for any number, and it may be reasonable for someone out there who has been craving this note forever and has never seen one come to market. But it's extraordinarily expensive to put together that pre-1898 collection, it would cost 5 figures to put together the collection he has (assuming they're all original... which I'm hesitant to do).

These notes can sell for thousands, and many of them have been counterfeited as a result. When you're buying one of these, you better know exactly what you're doing, and especially what the watermarks are supposed to look like.
