bimm
barneycoins in Germany is selling a lot of novodels. Are these true novodels or are they modern fakes? The auctions are ending soon, and I am not bidding. Here is one example: http://rover.ebay.com/rover/1/711-53200-19255-0/1?type=2&campid=5335826004&toolid=10001&customid=&ext=110609798138&item=110625972724 Also, patchsshop sells coins described as "RARE COPY (100% like original) MADE IN SOVIET ERA FROM SILVER / MUSEUM COPY SOVIET HIGHT QUALITY!" Do these differ from novodels in that they were not made by the mint?? Thanks!

Do these differ from novodels in that they were not made by the mint?? Thanks! They are fakes, and pretty bad ones IMHO. Genuine novodels were always made by the Imperial Russian mint, or at least struck from dies which were made by the mint. There are some coins such as the 1915 rouble or the 1914 Gangut commemorative rouble which were struck in the early 1920's by the Soviets, but they used the original dies. The same applies to some gold coins of Nicholas II, although it is not known exactly which years were affected (probably 1911 ten roubles, for example, was then struck in quantity -- the original mintage firgures are far too low for the number of 1911 gold 10 rouble coins on the market today).
