rvrboy
hello everyone!` I wanted to see if anyone has seen a mistake like this. An "s" is clearly visible on Lincoln's Beard. let me know what you think!
thedeadpoint
Doesn't look like a recognized variety! http://coppercoins.com/diesearch.php Sorry
rvrboy
I know! i couldnt find anything like it! Just random stamped mint marks. Anyone else?
thedeadpoint
If I remember correctly, the mint stopped punching branch mintmarks in Philly in.... the 80s? Anyway you can give a better pic?
rvrboy
sure i'll try. I'm not sure how to upload a sharper image through this site. There is no mint mark under the 1990. The only reason I could think of for this would be a piece that fell from another stamped coin.
TheCoinCzar
I don't know how it got there, but there is definitely an "S" right there on his beard. It must be an error of some sort. Good eye.
just carl
Sure does look real and not a post mint damaged coin. I too suggest trying the www.coppercoins.com web site. Sort of experts there on lincoln Cents.
rvrboy
Thanks for the references! I've been trying to find a similar error online with no luck. I've only found a very few examples of strike through coins but this doesn't have any of the characteristics of one. Perplexing.
bill
The picture is not clear enough to fully comment. Is the S raised or incuse? Grease can fill letters in the dies, then drop off and get transferred to another part of the dies where it creates the image until it is gone. You may have an example of this effect. It would not show up in variety lists since it isn't a die variety, rather a minting "error."
rvrboy
Bill- The "s" is raised. I'm still trying to get a better pic to post. I'm having a hard time catching it at the right angle. I've not seen another example of this error. Do you know of any websites that may have a pic to see? bill
If the letter is raised, it would not be a grease number. It would have to be punched into to die.
