silverfunk
Hello All, I am trying to identify a coin/medallion possibly Greek. Its a very small gold coin or medallion, about the same size of a 1/10 gold bullion coin, maple or ase. Reverse side of the coin shows a man and woman with what appears to be a bird above the mans head. Observe shows a man covering the entire piece with the following lettering in greek or roman. To the left of his head IZ or and the right of his head XZ If anyone could provide me with more information on this piece it would be greatly appreciated. mmarotta
While seemingly of ancient style, this is obviously a modern piece, a work of art in the sense that someone purposely made it as jewelry. Whether it is one-up or a production run, I cannot say. Either way, unless you know that this is the work of a popular Turkish artist, someone teaching today, or a gallery favorite, it is just as easily the work of crafts person who makes them to sell to the retail shops. Here in Ann Arbor, we have "Walmart Wolverines" who buy pre-faded commercial U of M gear to wear around town, like they are actual alumni. Same idea: looks old; made yesterday. IC XC would be Jesus Christ, except that it is wrong for the time, place, and style.
silverfunk
Thanks for your're reply. I had an idea in my mind that it was definitely a token / medallion of some sort. Would be interesting to find out the gold content of the piece.

Perhaps it is gold plated; any jewelry shop, or most coin shops, should be able to tell you if it has any gold in it or not.
mmarotta
I had an idea in my mind that it was definitely a token / medallion of some sort. No, not at all. You did not state the SIZE of the thing, but it looks about the size of a US Dime. My guess is that there were ten to thirty of them, either all alike, or a mix, strung on a necklace. It is jewelry, not a numismatic item. It looks like a coin, the same way that buttons can look like medals. You can go to the mall and buy some designer label fake military looking peacoat with eagles or anchors on the buttons. Same thing. I never guess the metal from the scan. Gold can be any color. But it is best not to get your hopes up.
silverfunk
I stated the size was about the same size as a 1/10 bullion gold, i.e. maple. Not getting hopes up, just want to get to the bottom of it. Thanks everyone for replies.
