cmusat
Hello! I'm new on this forum - i've been asking my friends about a coin I have (the one in the photos) and they directed me here as the best place available to make an idea about it. My first question is - how rare is it? Krause only mentions the 1770/1764 overstrike. The second would be regarding a fair price for it. Thank you, Claudiu

The overdate is also interesting. Prices are not very predictable these days. Maybe around $60?

cmusat
) Hope you're kidding.. I paid 150 for it myself and seeing this: http://www.icollector.com/Russian-Coins-and-Historical-Medals-Catherine-II-1762-1796-Grivennik-1771-TI-2-67-gm-Bit_i8745598 where the overstrike isn't een present, I believe the price should be higher. Doesn't anyone know some figures on how many of these overstrikes are there? Thanks

Your coin is very nice and interesting, but is not problem free. The overdate is also interesting, but since almost no catalogs distinguish overdate coins as a standalone variety, the premium that the overdate adds is not very high. Maybe 10%-20%. $150 is the current worth of this coin - since that is the price you were willing to pay for it. What the resale price of this coin might be - nobody can say. It might be higher or it might be lower. A lot depends on luck!
STEVE MOULDING
Hello. First the bad news: (1) almost every 1771MMD 10K that I have records of shows the overdate, and (2) the scratch is particularly deep which clearly drops the value. That's the bad news. The good news is that (except for the nasty scratch) this coin is in much better condition than most others I've seen, and the overdate is particularly clear. Value? If it's for your collection and you paid $150, then as Alex points out, that's the value and I'd be happy with it. If you want to turn it around to make a quick buck, that's a different story. If I was buying it I wouldn't consider it cheap, but it's not overly expensive either. Steve
